For A Total of 17 Credits

Can anyone tell me if this schedule is too much? I think it might be…

IHUM (4 units)
Math 19 (3 units)
Physics 21 (3 units)
either Econ 1A (5 units) or Poli Sci 4 (5 units)
A 1-unit Museum Admin course

…for a total of 16 units

How time consuming is physics 21 for fuzzies? I might drop physics but then take both Econ 1A and Poli Sci.

Thanks a lot!

Should be OK, bluebubbles. If you’re worried about math or physics being hard, cut it down to three courses. And as I’ve said before, I recommend against Polisci 4, except that it does hit two GER’s.

Thanks for the input, Sly!

Uhoh, is polisci 4 bad? I’d rather take that than polisci 2.

Is it too much to drop physics and take Econ 1A and PoliSci 4 at the same time?

FYI - Polisci 4 is offered in the spring this year.

Econ 1A isn’t too much work, but if you want to do well you will have to study (especially because I think Marcelo is teaching 1A in the fall).

@walkyu Woops! Wrong class! I meant polisci 1, not polisci 4. Haha good thing you saw that :D

Crap, yea, I’ve heard bad things about Marcelo and I haven’t even had a single class at Stanford. But for this year, some guy named Taylor is teaching it in the fall. He’s also got us buying his own textbook for the class. Very smart, very smart…

Huh, interesting. Didn’t think Taylor taught intro classes. By the way, Taylor is one of the nation’s most preeminent economists…he founded the Taylor rule (not the calculus one, but a major concept in macroecon). Dunno how good of a prof he is, but he isn’t just “some guy” :p.

Also the Taylor book is widely regarded around the country as one of the better introductory econ books out there (close competition with the Mankiw text). You would be using that book even if someone else was teaching 1A.

I’d like to elaborate. Marcelo is indeed a difficult professor, but one of the best lecturers in the department, and certainly one of the most approachable. I learned a ton, but worked hard too.

Taylor wrote the book for Econ 1A.

Haha no that was sarcasm on my part. I figured he must be pretty darn good if he wrote the textbook. We actually did the taylor equation in IB Economics! Wow I didn’t know he’s the one who proposed it, thanks for that tidbit. Should be a good class then.

Do a lot of people take a foreign language their freshman year? Is this schedule going to be too much?

Chinlang 1
CS 106x
ihum
Math 51

Freshman year language is pretty common.

It’s definitely a tough schedule (a solid 19 units). It’ll depend on how much prior experience you’ve had with cs, chinese, and math. Definitely doable, but don’t be afraid to change it up if you feel you get too busy (you have about 3 weeks to decide).

Could some current students tell me if this schedule would be too much? Looking at the days my classes meet, I would have about 2-3 days off to catch up on homework.

Beg. Modern Dance
English 47: Masterpieces of Contemporary Lit.
First Year French
IHUM/PWR
Beg. Voice
Beg. Piano

For a total of about 20 units (Ouch!)

just a clarification- as frosh we can’t enroll in classes until we speak to our advisor, correct? the purpose of these lists are just to have an idea of what we’re going to try to enroll in upon our arrival, right?

^ Correct. I thought we could enroll but I called Stanford and they said we’re basically locked out of signing up for classes until we see our advisor.

Would IHUM + MATH 51 + PHYSICS 61 + CS 106A for 16-18 units be too much?
How hard is CS 106A for people with no prior programming experience ?

wow cindy that does seem like too much but it all depends on your prior experience.

and why are you trying to take so many beginning 1 unit classes olive tree? why not split them up over the year?

What about

SLE (9 units)
Japanese (beginning) 5 units
1 unit P.E. class
intro seminar (3-4 units)?
or is that too much?

SLE kinda sucks and takes a lot of time. Other than that it’s pretty easy schedule.

Hey guys! I’m in an overwhelming conundrum after having gone through this stuff and I’d really appreciate it if you could take some time to help me out.

I’m a prospective Politics/Econ/IR major and this is what I’ve come up with for this Autumn:-

Math 51/42
Polisci 1/ Econ 1B
Econ 11N (introsem)
Spanlang 1
IHUM

Now that’s 21 units and I’m not crazy enough for that. So here are my concerns:-

2) I really don’t want to take ECON 1A/1B because it’s all familiar material. But I really want to take Polisci 2 and it’s only offered in winter. Is it worth taking politics two quarters in a row? If it isn’t, and I’m not taking the ECON 1 series, that means I have no social science classes in autumn and I’m not sure I’d like that.

3) I wanna get to learn Spanish quickly enough. But is it worth leaving this for later? If I do, that could solve my work-load crisis, but then I’d have to pile this up later on. Oh, and is Spanlang 1 ok for someone who knows absolutely NOTHING of Spanish? (that’s me!)

This is so frustrating… thanks a heap in advance!

That’s an OK schedule. Math 51 is indeed difficult esp. in fall quarter. Most ppl who takes 51 in the fall are science-majored and good at math which means the curve will not be in your favor. Language classes are usually pretty. Econ 1A is offered every quarter.
