I know Rochester is cold, but how cold? How long does the winter weather last? I don't have any long sleeve shirts, so I'm wondering how many I should buy (as opposed to short sleeves.)
All of my clothes are old and ratty, so I'm planning to buy new ones, anyway. Could anyone suggest what I should bring?
I know I'm asking early, but I have to plan ahead so I can pay for it all.

What we did was send my guy with summer stuff (and a sport coat/slacks). He wore summer stuff for quite a while. Then he bought more of what he needed up there as they have a MUCH better selection of winter clothes. There are free buses to the malls.

Come with shorts, shirts, a couple pair of jeans/pants, a dressier shirt or two for appropriate occasions (or even acting), and a light jacket or sweatshirt + footwear you like.

You’ll also likely want a welcome mat that is designed to collect water/dirt for your shoes and a fan. Those can be bought up there at Walmart.

I always advise students moving from a warm climate to Rochester to delay purchasing their cold weather clothing until after it gets wintery because how much a person is bothered by the cold is highly individual dependent. Also the tunnels and overheated classrooms/dorm rooms mean you really don’t need to dress as warmly in the winter as you might think.

Fall when you arrive will be hot and muggy. Bring lightweight clothing with you to wear when school starts. A hoodie or light jacket for nights and cool October days is about all you’ll need at first. It rains in Rochester in the fall, so a light rain jacket and shoes you can wear in the rain would be a good idea. An umbrella if you’ll use one.
Some jeans, T-shirts and maybe a flannel shirt if you’re guy will suffice. Girls tend to dress up a bit more than the guys do.

As the weather turns colder, you can shop at local stores for major purchases like a down or synthetic jacket and winter boots. UR’s shuttle goes to the mall on weekends. Plenty of stores to shop at there in a wide range of prices. Dick’s Sporting Goods carries top of line brand name winter clothing. There’s also a very good second hand store–Savers–behind the mall near the movie theater. It’s great place to furnish a dorm room–or pick up some gently worn winter clothing.

And as I reminded my kiddo—there’s always internet shopping for stuff you can’t find locally or want to comparision price. UPS (and FedEx and USPS) delivers.
