As a massachusetts resident, I agree 100%, UMass, UNH and URI are among the worst public flagship universities in the country (I’d rather go to Wyoming than UMass)

Really Wyoming, you hate UMass that much? I have been to U of Wyoming and boy it looked liked a ghost town.

Yeah, UMass has a good reputation if you want to work in Boston but if you really want to learn academically, it’s a waste of your time.

Yeah, I don’t know how far the name will take you out of the country.

I really like the smallish state flagship schools in the south, because they are easy to get into, have beautiful campuses, are relatively cheap for out-of-state students, have bigtime sports, and are reputedly quite friendly.

I like everything about the U of Mississippi, but I can’t get past the fact that ALL of the University of Mississippi apparel says “Ole Miss” instead of “Mississippi.” “Ole” is simply the wrong word here…if they can’t say “Mississippi” they should say “Ol’ Miss.” "Ol’ " is the shortened version of “Old,” NOT “Ole.”

I also like the size and location of the U of Arkansas, but I can’t get past that whole Razorback (pig) mascot. I don’t belong to a religion that avoids pork, I just can’t believe they couldn’t find a mascot more deserving of idolization. Ok, it’s better than the mascots of the U of South Carolina and Oregon State, but that ain’t sayin’ much.

Agreed. (ten char)

I love public universities in the south because of their affordability, I just think that the emphasis on sports is hurting the academic reputation of some of these schools that are not well known around the country. People know the colleges for their sports programs but not for their academics despite the fact that they are academically excellent schools as well.

UGA is like the top 58th school according to US News. I think this would go to what pierre is saying. But the academics have gotten better, but some people go mainly for the sports.

another example, Clemson is the 61st ranked school according to US News and is moving fast up in the rankings and has an excellent engineering program. However nobody in the Northeast knows about Clemson for its academics, my friends told me to go to Clemson just because of the football team…

Lots of schools in the south are well-known for both, however. Look at UNC, Wake Forest, Dook, and every once in a while UVA.

well we’re talking about schools not known for both, UNC, Wake Forest, UVA, Duke are in a class of their own and those schools are in the northern part of the south

we’re talking about schools like USC, Clemson, UGA, Alabama

OR…the athletics gets people to look into the university, and then top students apply when they see the good academic standards. 5 of the schools I applied to were in the SEC (Accepted at all but UF), 3 in the ACC (Accepted FSU, UM, not GT), and 4 non D-IA, but 1 (Winthrop) is a marquee basketball school, leaving GA State, Drexel, and Penn as the only schools w/o athletic reps that I applied to. With the exception of Penn, My athletic powerhouses were better schools than my unathletic schools.

and never put those 1st 3 in the same sentence as 'Bama

I would also add UF Pierrer.

why not? Alabama is an amazing school if you want to study business, accounting, dance, nutrition and dietics, social work, communication and information science, and nursing

when you can’t get into an in-state school GA State or Southern, you apply to 'Bama

HARVARD…no interest

GA State and Southern aren’t that great of schools, 'Bama is better for sure. I would say the top schools in Georgia are:
Emory
GA Tech
UGA
Scad (if you like that type of thing)

Never: Bob Jones University, Liberty University, Oral Roberts University, Boston College, Lehigh University, every college/university south of the Mason Dixon line except U of Virginia and Tulane.

Best: Top 25 LAC or Brown U.

I have never heard of Bob Jones. Why is it so bad?

Bob Jones is a christian college in Greenville, SC and is known as one of the most conservative colleges in the country, i don’t know why other people hate it other than it’s extreme conservatism
