What do college students usually carry with them?

Throughout high school I've done everything to make my backpack as light as possible (going to lockers every single period, hiding books in the classrooms, or sharing books), but now that I'm going to college soon I'm worried about the amount of stuff that students have to carry.
Besides a laptop and a notebook, do students need to bring textbooks or other materials to class?

It really depends if your college professors use textbooks =P Some professors use textbooks and some don’t at all. Thus, there is no definite answer to your question. It’s a more “it depends” answer. I know, the “it depend” answers are so bleh . . . However, from my experiences at college, I’ve only had to carry one hard-covered textbook with me. That textbook was for statistics. In my experiences, science and math professors tend to use heavier textbooks. However, don’t feel to burden. Depending on the college you go to, you’ll be allowed to ride bikes and skateboards for transportation! Woo hoo!

No to be honest. I don’t even take my laptop to class because its a little big. Notebooks for notes, but if you plan to take a laptop you could take notes on that. I’ve seen some people carry textbooks around, but i’ve never had to. I guess it depends on what you plan to do while you’re out. If you’re gonna stop and study somewhere you might need it. Besides the basics of pencils, pens, and a notebook I don’t carry anything.

If you can bring yourself to do your homework at home (i.e. don’t leave them for the last minute ;)) then you don’t need to carry your books. Laptops, I find useful only for doing typed work while on the go. Notebooks are lighter and you can actually draw stuff on them, so unless you have a tablet (which I have seen exactly 1 of in 1.5 semesters here) don’t bother.

If you have breaks between classes and you drove your car, it is easy since you can just get the books as you need them. Also in my experience, most books are not used in class unless it is a math related class. (Although I don’t know about sciences like chemistry, biology, physics)
I am an art major so I barely have anything. I have one textbook (art history) that I bring everyday but other than that I just have a couple notebooks, small supply box, pens, etc.
Depends on the classes you are taking I guess.

Phone
Pen
Headphones
Wallet
Condom

^ If you don’t carry a notebook you could drop the pen. An even lighter load. XD

are you serious? at college, you don’t have to bring all your stuff miles away from home to school every day. you live walking distance away from class. personally, i bring absolutely nothing to most classes, except the essentials like your key, ID, personal clock. taking notes is a waste of time and you will never need your textbook. if i do have to bring a notebook or folder, i just carry that. no need to sling over an entire backpack just for one folder.

Whew, thought this was another guns-on-campus thread.

^zing

A notebook, pen, and bike lock (I cycle to campus). My textbook(s) when I have quizzes and know I’m going to have time between classes to study.

I have never encountered any professors who expect you to bring your textbooks to lecture. If you have labs though you will probably need a lab notebook to bring with you. I will usually carry my lightest book in my backpack with me in case I want to study in between classes without having to go all the way back to my room. My laptop is heavy and it sometimes shuts off by itself when it’s not plugged in so I never brought it to class. I also don’t take notes in any of my classes anymore because I feel like that distracts me from understanding the lecture. Most professors post up their notes on slides that they put online anyway, and even if they don’t (it’s usually only the math classes), I’d rather just try to comprehend it without writing it down.

it also depends on whether or not you live on campus and have the time to drop your stuff off at your room between classes. Personally, I don’t need an actual textbook for any of my classes. The heaviest things I carry with me are my laptop and water bottle.

Phone
Wallet
Keys
Backpack with normal school stuff and netbook
Bike (not carried, use)
XL Magnum condom that I normally wear around my neck

Shoulderbag/Handbag.
Phone, purse, keys.
Notepad and pen.
The week’s novel. (I’m doing English)

Notebook, pens, and a water bottle.
I much prefer writing things down to using my laptop in class.

Well, the three things I never leave my room without are:

1) My key.
2) My phone.
3) My chapstick.

What I bring for class is:

Laptop (to certain classes) or notebook

Folder for loose papers/handouts

Pens

Highlighters

…those are the basics. I tend to carry a lot more such as:

Planner

Sticky notes

Pill bottle w/ibuprofen, Tylenol etc.

Tissues

Glasses (so I can see in class)

Snack

Water bottle

Wallet

I switch blade knife that says “kill all betrayers” on the handle…

I usually carry a small tote bag with just my Kindle, a notebook, pens/pencils, my wallet, glasses, sunglasses, chapstick, phone, keys, water bottle, granola bar or something, etc. I don’t carry my backpack unless I need to bring my laptop to class (3 of my 4 professors don’t even allow it, so I don’t usually bring it anywhere), or if I need to bring textbooks. If you are in a large lecture class you do not usually need to bring your textbooks to class. If you are in a smaller class, a discussion section, or if the book is a novel you are discussing or something, you should bring your books.

Backpack with a couple of notebooks, pens, paper, assignments, etc.

Sometimes a book or magazine or newspaper to read

Occasionally laptop

Glock

I don’t carry my laptop to class because I find it too distracting…but that’s really a personal preference.

I carry:

-Backpack with a notebook for each class that day (if I won’t have time to come home in between), pens, pencils, calculator (mostly for Statistics), keys, and sometimes wallet.

It’s really very light.
