So Im doing the college application process independently and Ive just been sending 1-2 emails to former teachers to ask them for teacher recs. so i was wondering:

Whats the suggested number? Should I ask as many teachers as I can who I think will give an at least above average one, then choose which out of those are the best? Or do they send them directly to the colleges themselves so I dont even see them?

Teachers either send the letters directly to the college, or give them to you in a sealed, signed envelope. Some teachers will give you a copy so you can see if there’s anything they missed, but some won’t.

All teachers, however, will be royally ****ed if you ask for letters of reccomendation from 6 teachers and then throw out all but 2. Don’t do that unless you want them all to write you horrible letters.

but wouldnt they hav already written it by the time u threw out so they cant write u ‘horrible letters’? but thats beside the point I wont do that.

so its not entirely sure if u will get to read it or see it before it’s sent. how do they know which schools?

Usually, you give them a list of schools and a bunch of labeled and posted envelopes. All they have to do, then, is put the recommendations in them and drop them into a mailbox. Only ask two teachers who are going to write you excellent recommendations, any more is overkill.
