I am looking for a perspective on current social life. I think this will be a good fit for my daughter, but she is worried about social life. She is not a partier or drinker by any means, but she is outgoing and loves to socialize, and is nervous the school is overly studious and introverted. She loves going to athletic events, wants to play intramurals, go to the city, and get really involved in school spirit/participation. She is also up for making brownies and video gaming too. Don’t think she interested in rushing, but may at a school like this. Many threads say that school spirit/participation is not very good at Case. Not sure if that means all our crazy parties, or if it is really crickets on campus over the weekend.
So I am looking for honest feedback on what the kids do. Also wondering if the school offer any day or weekend trips anywhere? I can’t seem to find any.
It sounds like your daughter and mine are similar. CWRU is very high on my D’s List. It wasn’t even in the running until we visited campus on a whim. If you haven’t gone on a tour yet, I highly recommend it. While I can’t speak from personal experience, the tour guide made it very clear that CWRU has a lot of extracurriculars and intramural activities to participate in. It was almost exhausting listening to all of the things this young man personally was involved in. I got the impression that while CWRU was not a big party scene like many of the bigger state schools, there was something to offer for everyone. Our tour was quite a while ago so I don’t remember specifics but I also seem to recall the admissions presentation mentioning things about students going into Cleveland for sporting events and theater. I know there are some other threads on this site discussing the social life at CWRU so you should probably check those out. I found them helpful. Good luck to your daughter and her search for the best fit!
Thank you. We have been to campus a few times and we did the tour one of those times. There weren’t any overnights offered so it is tough to get a true sense. We actually found out from a past tour guide (not from Case) that most of the tour kids exaggerate their extra curriculars. Lol. I guess that makes sense. I have seen some threads from a few years ago. I guess I am just looking to get an update recently. I think the lack of school spirit and lack of kids at football games etc… is what worries her the most. That kids are so studious, they don’t even like going to a football game and rooting for their own school. She already went to high stress private and wants serious kids, but a little more fun too.
DS is a junior in engineering. He is in a very low-key fraternity and does some things with the house. Most of his friend group is not Greek. They go to campus events, like concerts and movies, events in Cleveland, hang out, and some parties. He plays a club sport and a music group and is involved in an activity associated with his major.
He has been to a few sports events, but not many. But he always recites a long list of things he’s done on the weekend.
My DS thought about joining a fraternity, was invited, but instead has formed strong bonds with his club sports team. They spend a lot of evenings/weekends together and have a friendships that extend beyond the sport. They have gone into Cleveland together, attended sporting events (Cavs, Indians), gone to art museums and plays … and some drinking and carousing, too, but not all the time.
He has a girlfriend who’s not on his sports team but has her own circle of friends … and he’s getting to know them, going to music concerts (Cleveland is a stop on many national tours), gone out for meals, stayed in for coffee and board games …
All this while keeping up high grades in engineering and doing co-ops in his field.
In sum, he’s having a happy social life with a productive intellectual life … tho I don’t believe he has once attended a Case football game.
@NewSR1@LisaBKG My son played intramural soccer all four years at Case. He planted community gardens and other service work in freshman year, with the service house, and tried a fraternity that he did not fit well with, it was the accounting business focused fraternity. He took a long weekend trip sponsored by Case, to Toronto with Case friends, a bus was provided and it stopped at Niagra Falls, I think. . There are both fall and spring break trips available and I heard of one of his friends, a senior at Case, went to Los Angeles, on a Case sponsored trip, via airplane, also payed for with a special fund. He went out to dinner in Coventry and Little Italy, and played music with ensembles. He joined an Ethical Leaders club that sent him to two away conferences, all expenses payed, to Los Angeles, and Annapolis. He went apple picking and ice skating. Over the summer, he lived in Cleveland for one summer, he watched the Cavs play a lot, on huge screens set up at bars around Cleveland. Its a big sports city. He had season tickets to the Cleveland Orchestra, really enjoyed those concerts with dates
and freinds. He built up a great set of friends at Case, and he still sees those friends regularly, two years later.
In fact he is spending his spring break during grad school in Cleveland this week, as he loves the city so much. He lives five hours away now but still drives to see his friends, his senior advisor, and enjoy Cleveland every spring. Having a girlfriend there probably has something to do with that!
