I am interested in hearing from current or former students on what you love about Bowdoin. I know Bowdoin has one of the highest student satisfaction rates. Are you glad you picked this college? Have you ever looked back and wished you picked one of your other options? Thank you so much for any insights!

Sent to me by my niece who went to Columbia, but truly wished she had gone to Bowdoin, where her boyfriend went:

Bowdoin is life. I’m an accepted student.

Growing up in Maine, I’ve been around Bowdoin my whole life. Many community members have attended the school, and I have at least ten friends who have been to that college. Everyone I know has loved it! I’ve yet to hear a bad comment.

I’m on campus a lot all throughout the year. I play the violin in a little ensemble there (they needed an extra player), and my high school also uses the indoor track in the winter. EVERYONE IS SO FRIENDLY! Even though I’m clearly not a student, people still say hello when I pass by.

I’ve heard the freshmen orientation is amazing. People get to meet new people right away while also exploring the beautiful Maine outdoors (it is so beautiful in the summer!). Also, there is a big lobster feed when students are all back on campus. Bowdoin really wants to have that community- feel- competition is never seen. Also, the education is great. Students are here to learn! There is also no competition with graduate students for research projects. Professors form close relationships with students, and many classes end up having desserts in professors’ houses or going for a sailboat ride in late May. The classes are all very small (biggest ones around 50 people), and this is good if a student wants to continue their education later on because professors can write more personal letters of recommendation. There is also a career advice center, and all students have an advisor. The perk of a small school is that it is individualized to what you need- undergraduates are always the main focus.

Bowdoin students balance academic rigor with a healthy lifestyle. Not only is the food ranked #1, the dorms are also amazing. The student union is great, and students are super friendly. Brunswick is a charming, coastal town. If you have not been, I’d recommend visiting! It’s the perfect college town in my opinion. It is 4 miles from the sea, just over an hour to Sugarloaf (biggest ski mountain in the East), and 25 minutes from Portland, ME, which is also beautiful. Freeport is close too and has lots of outlets. However, my friends at Bowdoin rarely feel they need to leave campus since there is so much going on. I’ve heard Ivies weekend is a big hit.

I’ve known several friends who have turned down big Ivy League names for Bowdoin simply because they felt like they would be happier at this school. If you’d like to know more, please DM me!

If a college can still have some of the happiest students in America alongside the frigid, Maine winters… I’d say it must truly be a great school!

I’ve heard that being on the coast, Bowdoin’s winters aren’t actually that bad–very similar to Boston weather. In fact, I believe places like Vermont and upstate New York have much harsher winters. Plus, Bowdoin has a long winter break in December/January and a two week spring break in March.

What I’ve always loved about Bowdoin is the balanced, healthy lifestyle that is encouraged for all of the students. Academics are strong, but not in a particularly intense, competitive, stressful way. There’s a sense that it’s also important to get outside, be active, eat healthy foods, have fun, make good friends and develop an attitude of caring towards the community and the “greater good.” For what it’s worth, this list put Bowdoin as the top healthiest college in the country <a href=“The Freshman 15: Is It Real and Should You Avoid It”>http://greatist.com/health/healthiest-colleges
