What do you do if you see a law enforcement officer on the security camera?

Reviewing the security footages, I see someone in what looks like a law enforcement officer uniform. The car they came in looks like a private car. The pictures are blurry. I can’t make out details but there seems to be a badge on the chest. What could they have come for? What did I do?

I’d probably call the non-emergency line for the local law enforcement office and ask.

A LEO came to our (temporary - not current) home to see if we might have security camera footage to share with them after a neighbor’s truck was vandalized. He was a detective in uniform but the only indications that he drove an official car were the tags and not very obvious red/blue lights.

More recently, a couple of women saw LEOs in their backyards. It turned out they were looking for shell casings and other evidence from a shooting that had caused nextdoor and other sites here to erupt with wild speculation. The officers did not go to the front doors before searching the lots, which would have annoyed me. I would have called and made my displeasure known.

As noted above, I’d be contacting the non-emergency number, and reporting what I’d seen. Recently in our area (according to Nextdoor) there have been some folks wearing “official” uniforms (electric company, gas company, etc.) that are not part of those organizations, and it’s believed they were “casing” the area while making it look like they were doing official business.

During the brief time I paid attention to Nextdoor, it seemed that crime, fear of crime, or speculation about crime were the hot topics there.

sounds like you should upgrade your camera system. Even with an HD resolution camera the images should be pretty sharp and these days they’re selling 4K cameras. It doesn’t sound like your current system is going to do all that much good; if someone were to break in and all you’ve got is a blurry image it may not help that much.
