What do you guys think of for profit schools?

I just wanna know what you guys think of devry university of phoenix and full sail

With all the very good nonprofit alternatives available, I fail to understand why anyone would choose one of these places. I eagerly await enlightenment.

Perhaps the students are relatively poorly informed about the other options.

They might also be attracted to distance learning, evening classes, or simply availability of classes compared to overfull local community colleges and state universities*. But that does not necessarily mean that they are great choices.

*Indeed, some have claimed that cutbacks in government funding of community colleges and state universities have resulted in greater government financial aid spending for students at the for-profit colleges and universities.

My biggest complaint about the for profits is that their credits typically do not transfer to a regular college.

One of the draws of the for profits is their lack of gen ed requirements. You will not take classes unrelated to your major. A bachelors degree can be earned in about 2 years.

In my area, ITT Tech actually has pretty good job placement with decent wages. At least for grads of their computer degree programs.

I would never suggest that anyone attend one. Look at your local CC and state schools - many have online and evening/weekend classes. A for-profit degree simply doesn’t garner the same respect or lead to the same optima as a real college degree.

Look carefully at the individual school’s graduation rate and job placement. Some for profit colleges are very good, others are not.

avoid them

For-profit schools are masters at marketing and making that profit. They are not the academic atmosphere of a school that requires attendance and interaction. They have very low, deeply low, admissions standards. (DH did some admissions consulting for one entity.) The issue isn’t the notion of distance learning- many universities offer that and do reasonably well. The issue is standards at a for-profit.

The commercials for Phoenix are touching. That’s marketing. Proceed with caution.

I will say that DeVry used to be a very good attendence-based school for tech training, in my field.
