My parents are always telling me I need something that makes me stand out as an individual. I am only a sophomore in high school, and I have already started a service club at our school, and I am the president of this club. We are currently raising money to buy school supplies for victims of Sandy and working with kids in the Congo. I am interested in schools such as Ivy League Schools and Stanford. Would me starting and being a president of a club like this make me stand out, or would I need something else?

Well I think naturally you have to understand that Ivy League Schools are selective, which is most likely why you are even mentioning them. It is not good enough to have an EC be what you’re counting on to get into a selective school. In fact although EC’s are certainly looked at by college admissions, you will definitely need to have good ACT/SAT score and a GPA/Class Rank to back it up. Colleges like Stanford are expecting the top of the classes with the highest GPA’s in their schools.

If you are talking about EC’s one of them is certainly not enough for the schools that you have mentioned. They will be looking for awards in competitions, achievements in your school, sports, volunteering hours, and leadership positions. With all of this in mind, I believe what you are doing is great and colleges will definitely view it as such.
