What do you think? Accepted or rejected?

Hey! I would really appreciate your opinions on my chances to the following universities:
Stanford EA
Duke
Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Northwestern
John Hopkins
University of Pennsylvania
Indiana University
Brigham Young University

I realize that I have a few reaches and a couple safeties, but do I have a chance for getting in to these schools? I appreciate your help. Here are my stats:

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Intended Major: Physics (or biophysics if offered)
GPA: 3.97 unweighted, 4.369 weighted
rank: 3rd of 364
SAT: 1430, 710 verbal, 720 math (will be retaking in Nov. and maybe Dec.)
SAT II: Have not received scores yet, should've recieved about 700 or more in each.
ACT: 32, will be retaking the 23rd, should receive 33 or 34
AP: AB Calculus (4), Physics, Statistics, English, and Microeconomics (Our school offers 10 but several were just added this year and I couldn't take them due to scheduling conflicts. Should this be mentioned in the school report?)

ECs: Varsity Gymnastics (4 yrs., been in my whole life, lettered each year), Varsity Cheerleading (3 yrs., lettered each year, NCA All-American, Motions Award, Sportsmanship Award), Class Officer (Treasurere, Secretary, VP, VP), Key Club (2 yrs., read to elementary school kids), Church Youth Group (4 yrs., President 1 yr.), Band (4 yrs., Marched 1 yr., band letter, alto saxophone).

Work Experience: Gymastics Instructor for about 7 months. Babysit for various family members.

Awards/Honors: National Merit Commended Student, Marion County Principal's Award (3 yrs., given to top 1, 2, and 3 percent of class respectively), Who's Who Among American High School Students ( 1 yr.), scored in 90th percentile on American Chemical Society end of year exam, National Honor Society, Straight-A Honor roll each semester, various honor ribbons for the highest percentage in individual classes.

Miscellaneous: I attend a seminary class (scripture study class) before school each morning for about an hour. I attended the Richard Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow's Leaders and Mayor's Teen Summit (both 1 day events). I watched my grandma for about an hour each day for 1 summer because she had alzheimers.

Stanford EA - 20% chance
Duke (30% chance)
Harvard - probably not
Yale - same as Harvard
Princeton - same as Yale
Northwestern - probably
John Hopkins - 75% chance
University of Pennsylvania - 45% chance
Indiana University - yes
Brigham Young University - Don't know anything about this school. Don't they have special religious requirements?

If your essays and recommendations are really good, you have improved chances at UPenn and Duke.

Thanks for your feedback!

Stanford-reach
Duke-reach
Harvard-far reach
Yale-far reach
Princeton-reach
Johns Hopkins-match
Pennsylvania-match
Indiana-safety/match
BYU-Assuming that you're Mormon, pretty good match. May be a slight reach.

Don't be frightened away from any of these schools, though. They are all extremely competitive, but you have a competitive record and might stand a chance at all of them.

ummmm.....i dont get where people make their evaluations since many more people get into duke/stanford/harvard/yale every year with worse stats than you. they are not impossible. you are in the same pool as everyone else. your chances are basically the same. these schools have odd acceptance policies. a girl from my school last year got into stanford with a 1270, shes white, 690, 670, and 710 SAT 2s nothing outstanding, not athletic. so give it a shot and work on ur essays

lol @ shrek, what did she write on her essay?

i dunno it must have been quite amazing except people value SAT score much more than they are actually valued. my cuzin is on the admissions committee for MIT and she says its the biggest misconception, kids think SATs are worth much more than they really are

Wow! That's really encouraging. I guess I just have to cross my fingers and hope for the best. A lot of luck seems to be involved. Thanks a lot!

stanford, harvard, princeton, yale - reach
duke, northwestern, JHU, indiana, upenn, byu - match

I think you're a pretty solid candidate for these schools. really concentrate on the stuff that's important to you and that you're good at (like gymnastics and cheerleading) and your essays and recs. might be what sets you apart from others with similar stats. work hard and think about those!!

and i would take off the "who's who" thing. it's pretty much just a fluff award - doesn't really add anything to your applicaiton

I hope this helps!

Thanks everyone for your help. If anyone else has any suggestions to make my application better it's really appreciated. Thanks again!

bump. Thanks

bump.......

Even if people put too much weight on SAT's, its always good to do well on them, incase of a tie or something. You have competetive stats, and those are competetive schools, so who knows? Penn seems like the place for you though.

Hey, I just got my SAT II scores. They are 680 Writing, 720 Spanish, and 750 in Math IIC. What are my chances with those added in? Will the 680 hurt me?

I don't think too much, especially if you want to be a physics major. The personal statement is a much more accurate measure of writing ability than a one hour exam with a rushed, twenty-minute essay anyways. I wouldn't worry. We have relatively similar stats; check out my thread "am i over shooting?"

Thanks for your help! Anyone else have any thoughts?

bump........

pretty good chance.

You've got great ECs (lifelong gymnast might get you points w/ the swimming/diving team), working is good, "leadership" roles, etc are all good.

Academically, you're strong, but not stellar. only 5 APs isn't awesome, but if you can somehow ask your counselor to mention that fact in his/her report, that might help clear up confusion.

If you do well on SAT IIs, and get good recommendations, you should get in.

Stanford: Far Reach
Harvard: reach (b/c you want physics dept)
Yale: far reach
Princeton: far reach
NU: match
Duke: match
JHU: close reach
U Penn: close reach
Rest are safeties.

bump.......

I would say harvard is a far reach. It's a far reach for basically everybody though.
