What do you think are the worlds top 10 universities?

QS 2013 recently came out and THES 2013 are due soon. So, I was wondering what you folk think are the global top 10.

For the record, my perspective is:

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
MIT
Caltech
Stanford
Chicago
Oxford
Cambridge
UCL

No specific order, but I feel they are the top 10 comprehensive schools.

Harvard
Yale
Stanford
MIT
Columbia
Chicago
Cambridge
Oxford
Penn
Duke

goldenboy is like a totally un-self-aware version of Sparkeye. He literally only posts to bring Duke into the conversation, and tries to be subtle about it by also bringing up either Penn, Northwestern, or Chicago.

Also, hooray, another rankings thread!..

Except Duke or Northwestern or Penn or Chicago legitimately belong in the conversation…

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Stanford
MIT
Berkeley
Penn
Columbia
Oxford
Cambridge

Except for Chicago, I wouldn’t say the others belong in a conversation of the top 10 universities in the world. They’re all clearly very strong, but top 10 in the world is stretching. World rankings focus more on factors like faculty awards, PhD programs, publications, etc than the USNWR undergrad rankings. There are other universities stronger by these measures, and the publics also come into play much more. Even within the southern US, Duke is at best tied, if not the 2nd best by these measures.

I can only give you the top 8:
H
Y
P
S
M
UC-Berkeley
Oxbridge

I think UChicago and Columbia definitely belong in the top 10 no questions hand. I forgot about Berkeley so I suppose HYPSM, the two Cs, Oxford, and Cambridge would round out the top 10.

Chicago definitely does. Not so sure UC@B but Chicago is a research HW.

Any school that literally has to beg students to apply to its undergrad program belongs no where near the top 10. Chicago does exactly this by bombarding prospective applicants with gifts and freebies.

I was somewhat amazed that U. Chicago bombarded my son with application material. They’re doing it again for my daughter. No other high ranking school did this.

Boise State
Western Kentucky
Harvard
Missouri
Stanford
MIT
Indiana State
Western Michigan
Princeton
Liberty U

Berkeley should be included

Berkely isn’t even close!!! Go Penn and Princeton

I’ll give more than 10. This is based largely on academic prestige:

Clear Top 10
**

 1. Harvard

-

slight drop

Stanford

MIT

Cambridge, UK

5. Oxford, UK**

slight drop

**6. UC Berkeley
7. Princeton
8. Yale
9. Caltech
**

-

huge drop

-

Columbia

Chicago

Next Group: Michigan, UPenn, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Northwestern, Cornell

Next Group: London School of Economics, Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon, ETH-Zurich,

What’s with this Berkeley nonsense. It’s ranked 21st in the U.S.

My list seems to be the only legitimate one.

^ You mean, it’s ranked 21 by US News. US News isn’t all about a ranking based on academic/school prestige. It is largely a ranking based on “college convenience”. No way in hell would a school like Vanderbilt or Emory or Rice would be superior to Berkeley in terms of academic prestige.

With the exception of HYPSM+Caltech, no school in the US that could match Bekreley’s superior academic programs across all major fields, top 1 for Chemistry, top 3 for engineering and computer science, top 7 for law, top 7 for business, top 2 for languages, top 3 for social sciences, top 4 for humanities and so on. In many academic areas, Chicago isn’t even considered top 5.

lol people who argue on this talking down about Chicago or Columbia or any of the other elite schools (ivy’s, chicago, MIT, CIT) are obviously upset they couldn’t get into one of those. Just about all of my friends applied to UChicago, Harvard, Yale…other elites and weren’t accepted…EVERY ONE of us who applied to UC@B was accepted…to compare UC@B to Chicago, MIT, CIT or any IVY is an absolute joke

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
MIT
Caltech
Stanford
Chicago
Oxford
Cambridge
Columbia

Berkeley is a place for faculty and graduate students but not undergrads, and it does have a very large faculty.
