How long are the labs? what exactly is a recitation? is inorganic or organic harder? how dangerous are the labs?

Inorganic Chem is an extension of High School Chem with some advanced concepts. I felt the labs were boring as hell and if you follow the rules, they are not that dangerous. Make sure to remember all the safety rules given by your instructor.

Organic chem is def more harder than inorganic chem.

I took one general college chem course. It consisted of three 50 minute lectures and one lab per week. Recitation sections are "lectures" given by teaching assistants in addition to the lectures given by the professors. In my experience they were used for going over additional material or simply used for asking questions. The labs were very straightforward. Pour this, mix that, observe, etc. The labs were two to three hours long. Since it was only a general course we covered the entire book at a pretty fast rate without focusing on any one thing.

Yeah, another thing: they move fast. They would typically cover an AP Chem course worth of info or more in one semester only. Better be ready. Organic chem is killer, one of the hardest courses u can take in college

I sometimes have bad memory. So how much dangerous is a college chemistry lab? I heard that they use chemicals like mercury, cyanide, hydrocloric acid, bleach, and MORE stuff that is banned in high school because ppl can get blinded or something. how much chem labs will chemE have?

I always wonder how hard Organic Chem is. A lot of my friends complain and do say that it's one of the hardest courses you take in college. For some reason I don't really believe in that. Has anyone taken Orgo AND engineering classes that can compare the two? Orgo is hard, but my guess is that it can't be harder than Wave Propagation or Communication Systems or Control Theory....just my guess though.

It really depends upon the professor. There's a lot of memorization involved, and so it's hard in that regard, as opposed to the engineering courses where a lot of times, you're looking at one reeeeally difficult concept and spend about five hours trying to understand the concept. They're both hard, they're just different kinds of hard. And non-engineers whine more. (kidding. ;) )

I will tell you terp as soon as I'm done with Acc Orgo and my ChBE classes next semester. This board will be the first to know.

Organic has alot of material to memorize, but can be made easier if you understand (really understand) concepts. Get a nice molecular model kit and use it often. As I remember, labs took longer than general chem labs, but weren't very much harder. I agree with being prepared when you arrive and arriving on time...often it's just the cooking that takes so long.

so, IBE, how was it?
