What Does An MBA School Interview Request Really Mean?

I'm an MBA applicant who is concerned I had no chance of getting in to a top 20 program. My grades in college were....terrible. GPA of only 2.04. But it was in a hard science - and it was a while ago - I received my BS in 1999.

But lo and behold I get two interview requests from one top 20 B-school, and one top 30 B-school.

Now, I've worked in a lab, I've been in the military (enlisted after BS in physics and after working in a lab), and now I work in aerospace where my title is 'senior engineer'.

Recently took GMAT and only got a 610. But I've taken some undergraduate business classes at a community college (Accounting I&II, Micro/Macro) and got A's.

My interview for the top 20 b-school went (in my opinion) really well. I came out with a very good feeling about the whole thing. Still no word yet. And I still need to schedule an interview with the other school, but I can't help wondering what it is that interests them about me - because I keep focusing on those awful grades in college from 15 years ago.

Do anyone think that they are just interviewing everyone, or is there something odd (in a positive way) about me that they wanted to check out?

Interviews are always good. The longer you’ve been away from academics, the less important your grades are. Most admission offices will not care too much about grades you received when you were 20 and weigh your past 15 years of experience much more heavily.
