Received a letter from Binghamton in which they "would like to offer guaranteed admission ... as a transfer student for fall 2010". The letter states that "to be guaranteed admission for fall 2010, we require you to do the following:"

There are 3 steps:
1. Enroll at another college, earn 24 credits with a cum. GPA of 3.0
2. Reapply by 1/15/10
3. Submit my college transcript and final HS transcript to "successfully complete your application".

Does anyone know if this is really a guarantee of admission?

It's hard to see what they are guaranteeing if I have to reapply and submit an additional HS transcript. Is this just another application process with no guarantee of anything at all?

it sounds like more of a conditional acceptance. but its still better than the letter my girlfriend got. she was placed on an unranked waitlist and thats it. so basically a nice rejection.

call admissions tomorrow to discuss in depth

My boyfriend got the same thing. Acc. to our counselor, your application is “tagged” and that way when you apply again, they will recognize that you were offered guaranteed transfer and give you the admission, provided that you fulfill the requirements they listed.

The point of the requirements is so you don’t just screw around/remain the worthwhile applicant they want. With respect to the boyfriend, he had everything but the GPA due to a pretty severe case of mono, which knocked him out of school for quite a while. Though teachers/counselors vouched for him, my guess is BU is trying to see if he truly can handle a college workload and maintain a good GPA before “really” admitting him, ergo “Guaranteed Transfer 2010.” But again, just my theory/logic.

And sean256, that’s kind of a cynical way to look at it—but I also wouldn’t be surprised if you were right.

Its seems pretty clear to me. Binghamton knows many students transfer out or leave after freshman year, so why shouldnt they give a transfer in opporunity like this. Seems like a wim-win to me. Whats nice is they are even giving you a chance to try the other school, and then notify them if you want to transfer. Whats not to like?
