I wish I had known about this site before we went through the process—people give great advice and are so supportive. OBD, did your son end up at Middlebury? If so, in my opinion, he ended up in one of the best situations possible! (My husband and 4 siblings and spouses ALL went there–I am the lone black sheep of the family! :)). I hope that one of my other kids will want to go there! Everything works out the way it is supposed to. Too bad there has to be the heartache for many in between!

Thanks Calmama-yes, I have 2 sons at Midd and I have to say, it did work out for the best. He really liked Midd best, but got caught up in going to a “more selective” school than his bro got into-that sibling rivalry thing…I wish I had known about this site a year before I did. Would have saved my family a lot of heartache-but it’ss all good now, and good life lessons learned.

Do any “non recruited” athletes actually make a D-III team? As in show up and try out and make it? I am talking about NESCAC schools.

^^It probably varies by sport and school, but I do know that one particular NESCAC coach told my son that every member of the team was a recruited member and they didn’t add to the team via tryouts (even though they are required to hold one). At another school, my friend’s son went to the tryout and he told his mom there were 35 kids at the tryout for 5 spots and after speaking with people, it as obvious that the spots were already saved for recruits.

Oldbatesie - every parent of a DIII recruit has the apprehension that when the news is finalized it might not be good. Do you think it’s habitual for coaches at many DIII schools to mislead recruits, even if subtly, so their dancecards remain full? Do you have a sense that Midd coaches are honorable (for lack of a better word) in this regard?

Keylme, do you know if NESCAC schools are required to hold tryouts? One coach we spoke said definitely yes…I am wondering if this is true across the board? My daughter is at the ED moment RIGHT NOW! Trying to make sure she at least has an opportunity to try out for the team and has not been told yes or no…coach is out of town, etc.

I do not know. Deadline is tomorrow at midnight, correct? I would call the AD’s at a couple of nescac’s and ask.
