What does this mean?

Please help me understand this. ~X( I'm confused and I feel like the financial aid office at a certain school and I are annoying each other.

Okay, my mother's tax accountant messed on her tax return (slightly) saying she made $100 more than she did. The W-2s she sent in did not match up and they wanted another W-2 that does not exist, now we're scrambling to make an amendment to her return before it's too late for me to get any financial aid from them.

The office said:

Your mother will need to submit a copy of her Amended Tax Return to our office after she has filed it with the IRS. We will then waive the requested W-2.

And I said:

Does this mean that you would prefer a receipt of approval from the IRS or that you will accept the forms used to make the amendment and a letter from her accountant? The latter could take up to 2-3 weeks, making me ineligible for financial aid (I believe), while I am able to send the former today.

They said

[quote]
We must have all documents submitted to the IRS in order to complete your application. If your mother is filing an Amended return, we must have a copy of that tax return in order to complete your application.

So I just said thanks because we were going back and forth and not getting very far. Does this mean they want to wait for the IRS to respond to us or that they just want what we're going to fix today? I guess I'm being repetitive but all I need if for them to say yes, send us the latter, or no, that won't work. What do y'all think they want?

When the amended return is dropped in the mail, send a signed copy to the school. I think that’s what they are saying.

I think they’re being very clear and making it quite easy. They want “a copy of her amended tax return”–period. That’s just a photocopy of what she is submitting. They didn’t ask for a receipt from the IRS, or an accountant’s letter, so I don’t understand why you’d think you needed those. You are making this complicated when it isn’t.

I think the OP is confused about what’s constitutes a return being ‘submitted’ or ‘filed’… To me it’s when you click submit on an efile and get notice that the IRS has accepted the return or drop a paper copy in the mail. There’s no turning back at that point before the IRS starts processing it.

Well, yeah. I wasn’t really sure what they were asking for because I’ve never done my taxes and my mother is being a little less than helpful.
I figured they might’ve wanted to know if the return had been accepted or not or they wanted to hear from our accountant to clarify everything. But I’m just going to send the amended return. Thank you both anyway.

Make sure the copy of the amended return is signed by your mom. Chances are, all they need is the signed copy.
