I am doing course selections and I have an extra elective that I’m not sure what I want to use it with. My current selections are:
1.Multivariable Calc/Calc 3
2.APUSH
3.AP Lang
4.Adv Computer science
5.Physics Honors
6.AP Chem
I want to fill my 7th spot with either:
-Ap Psychology
-Spanish 4
-Math Center (Which is basically a class where you tutor other kids but it’s an elective)
Extra info:
-I have a math/computer science/science based schedule, so any recommendations for if I want to go to a good college (UVA, NYU, UCLA, maybe Ivys/top tier).
-I haven’t taken PSAT because of COVID, took an SAT practice test and got 1360 no studying.
-I’m taking AP Calculus BC this year.
-My GPA is a 4.11 after freshman year, sophomore grades not counted in that, but I’ll likely get A’s and A-'s.
Since you plan on applying to a top school I would go with Spanish 4 since many kids applying will have 4 levels/years of a language. Since language is a core class I would suggest that even if it means dropping one of the two science classes.
I would suggest you replace either AP Chem or Avanced CS with Math Center (showing you use your math skills to help others is more important than one more class since it shows abilities to explain and relate to others+character, helps you stand out, and you can say you hope to continue this in college, which will be a +) and of course take Spanish 4 since it’s a core course.
Take whichever science you didn’t take jr year during sr year, since having Spanish 4 would meet entrance requirements and you’d then have a free spot.
Take the Spanish 4, because you need to have it to apply to top colleges. If you can handle this heavy course load, I would NOT drop one of your classes to take the math tutoring class. Yes, you are probably going to have to show some kind of volunteering/community service by the end of junior year to round out your application to top schools, but you don’t have to give up a class to do it. It’s far more important for you to show extraordinary achievement in something, as you seem you might be on your way to doing, in math or comp sci. If you want to and if it’s possible, you could do math center as an 8th class in the middle of the day, and eat lunch while you tutor, so that you could put down that you showed commitment by doing this for some extended period of time. But you’re probably going to have to come up with some volunteer/community service thing where you recruit other participants to join you in doing something innovative, such as bringing intro to coding in the form of games and puzzles to an elementary school in a disadvantaged area, to introduce kids there to the fact that coding is fun, and thus broaden their horizons.
