what else should i do?

Hi, I'm a high school sophomore from indiana and i have interest in going to west point. I have read the usma and other websites and i know this is the school for me. i was wondering what else can i do to be prepared, and have a good chance of getting in...
I swam varsity swimming my freshman year, and i am currently in the middle of this varsity swim season. I swim year round for my club team. I am in 4H, and i am the president of my local club. I am active in my church. I participate in concert band, jazz band, pep band, and marching band; this summer, i'll be either section leader or drum major. I am a member of our schools key club. I am a certified lifeguard, and next year, i'll take the EMT certification class. next year, I'll run for a class officer position(does it matter what position it is, or do they only care about the president position?) my GPA is around 3.65 and i take 2 honor classes. Thank you all so much for the help.

(also, just wondering, when trying to get a nomination from a congressman, do you only apply to your district, or can you apply to other districts? and, if anyone knows, how competitive is central indiana?)

Thank you...

hey, i live on the north side of indianapolis so i could prolly be of some help. you apply for nominations to dick lugar, evan bayh, and the ONE congressman from the district in which you live in - in my case, im in the very southern tip of IN 05 district, so dan burton nominated me. as for the class officer, there is a bubble on the app for president, vice president, and secretary/treasurer. i dont know your situation, but shoot for the one thats most guaranteed - you'd rather have VP then run for pres and loose. another thing the app likes alot is participation in hoosier boys state, which is a week-long mock indiana government in the summer between your junior/senior years (48 states have it). I would STRONGLY advise that you talk to your school official/counselor your junior year to try and go. and while there, run for an office, i ran for governor and put Candidate for Governor, 2008 Boys State on my resume under leadership and they loved it - theres even a bubble for governor or Lt. governor on the app if you happen to win.

what school do you go to?

Also, if you haven't done so yet, you should request information from Admissions. It will get you on the list of interested, potential candidates. You'll be notified about admissions events that will be scheduled in your area.

USMA Admissions: Start Young

You're lucky since you have time to get ready. Keep swimming with a goal of being a team captain during your junior or senior years, keep your grades up, plan on taking an early ACT/SAT to see what kind of prep work you'll need, look into SLS, and also Boys' State. When you run for office, don't do it just to put it on your application. Run for the office in which you are confident that you can make a difference. It might be a role less that class or student body president, but you might be able to accomplish something of significance.

Best of luck to you. Stick around and let us know how you're doing.

hey, thanks.

i'll ask my counselor about boy's state and check out the website. I go to brownsburg high school. i think its in the 4th district...

Thank you so much, i'll definitely be around.

fourth district shouldnt be as competitive - do you play rugby at brownsburg?

I don't becuase i dont have any time for another sport, but it seems the whole high school does. Club spring season for swimming starts as soon as high school season ends, then summer season starts, then fall season starts, then high school season starts again.... those guys on the rugby team are serious about it.

yeah we beat em in semi

Thats funny, what school do you go to?

also, do you know how many people applied to you district congressman?

i only know the numbers for west point - there were like 36 people competing for 10 nominations from dan burton. however i think only like 15 interviewed or pursued it

btw i go to North Central High School - being a swimmer, you've prolly heard of us

I would of imagined that more people would be interested. there were probably less people in my district. i dont have to worry about it until next year though.

we dont swim them, but i definitly know who they are. didnt they get second at state?

yeah they take swimming pretty serious at my school
