Schools outside of the top 100, do they recalculate applicants' GPA?

According to naviance, my GPA for freshman and soph year combined is 3.3, but if I calculate with only academic classes, it's a 3.125.

Most schools will recalculate it.

Something you can do is take difficult classes, and your school (and if not the schools you apply to) will give weight to those Honors, AP, and IB courses in most cases.

However, don’t be discouraged. Just keep above a 3.0 and there will be good colleges- maybe not the top colleges- that will accept you. If you can’t get those grades up, focus on ECs and volunteer work as well as building good student-teacher relationships so you can get great recs.

I don’t think most schools recalculate GPAs - think of the work to recalculate GPAs for 10K+ applying freshman. I do believe many very competitive schools will recalc. I think most schools just eyeball the GPA, class rigor and HS profile to get an idea of how they would do as a student at the college. And not all high schools will weight harder classes, nor do most colleges care about ECs. Look at the Common Data Set, section C7, for schools in which you are interested to see what you need to concentrate on.

I agree with Erin’s Dad. Colleges really don’t have time for recalculating and they look at your gpa overall, not just with academic courses.

A lot don’t consider GPA directly. They measure it through class rank and a lot of colleges specifically look at how you performed in your core classes and take into account your grade in more rigorous classes. Looking at those items they can usually tell how your GPA is. They do look at it overall, but mainly they look at your advance coursework.

California public universities do recalculate – but they make the applicants do the data-entry work into an on-line form, so that their back end system can recalculate the GPAs according to the desired formula.
