What grants are available for summer?

I go to a public college in Florida and I keep hearing about "summer aid".

As a student who was only awarded Direct and Parent PLUS loans last Fall and Spring. How much of this "aid" will be available for me?

Do you think it will be much, if anything? $500? $1000?

How are you hearing about this summer aid, from whom, and what kind of aid are they talking about? For federal aid at some schools summer is the tail end of the academic year, for others the beginning. If your school is the former and you’ve already received what you were awarded based on fafsa, there isn’t any more to get. If your school is the latter, any aid you may get for the summer based on fafsa would reduced the amount you would get in the fall and spring. If this is some sort of school based aid you’d have to ask the school about it rather than relying on hearsay.

It’s not hearsay. The university released their newsletter talking about requesting for summer aid. I believe it’s federal and maybe state also. My school places the summer at the end of the academic year, but they don’t award you the money for summer at the beginning. Summer aid hasn’t been awarded yet. They base it off of 2014’s FAFSA. I’m just confused at to what aid they’re talking about. Could you be awarded a grant, loan, or even work-study just for summer?

For this coming summer, it doesn’t make sense they would base it on the 2014-2015 fafsa if they treat summer at the end of the academic year. If you’ve used all your fafsa based aid during fall and spring I don’t think there’s more you can get. I think you need to contact the finaid office for the specifics.

Florida now requires students to take at least one summer session and I think the schools are doing their best to free up some financial aid just for summers. Bright Futures is not available for summer.

I don’t see how I could’ve used all my aid, when they only disbursed funds on a term by term basis.

twoinanddone, I’m aware Bright Futures is not available. Hopefully, they will free up some aid. I’ll wait and see, but I have a feeling I won’t get anything.

What he means is if you qualify for Pell or Direct Loans (which you can do by filling out FAFSA), your aid was almost certainly already taken up for the year. Say you qualify for full Pell. I think it’s in the neighborhood of $5600. Assuming a semester system, you get 1/2 each semester leaving nothing for summer. Same with direct loans. If you haven’t taken your full 5500 or whatever depending on your year, then you would qualify for the remainder of that loan.

For school-based aid, you must ask the school. Though, I think most schools gave out their FA awards for summer at least a month ago. YMMV.
