Like after you apply, if a parent loses their job, or there is some other financial crisis. What happens if you get accepted to a school ED and you find out you can't afford it?

If you can’t afford an ED school, then you can be let out of the agreement.

However, if you’re worried about that, then you shouldn’t apply ED because of the likely result.

Imagine this scenario…

Fall 2012: you apply ED to a school and maybe send some EA and RD apps in elsewhere.

Dec 2012: You get accepted to your ED school, you’re thrilled with the results, so you accept and withdraw your other apps (as required).

March 2012: your parent lose his/her job and you no longer can afford the ED school. Yikes…you have no other apps out there anymore that might be more affordable. What then?? Community college?

If you’re concerned about money/job/etc, then don’t apply ED. You can apply EA, and still apply to other schools (including financial safety school with merit scholarships) and then if something happens in the spring, you will still have your financial safety schools as options.
