What happens if your full pay one year and the next year need FA?

Due to my work, I expect that my daughter's tuition for b.s. will be paid in full for at least 2 of her 4 years. However, the other two years, I may not be eligible for tuition assistance from my employer. Therefore, I would need FA for her to stay in B.S.

Do schools have more aid for an existing student than they would have for a new student?

Usually unless your financial situation drastically changes, you will pay about the same amount each year. The schools budget for 4 years what they will spend on each student. So…I would recommend asking the school now, before committing. Explain the situation and ask how they would handle it.

I think they need “documented” evidence that your financial situation has drastically changed, so the first step is to let the school know your current status as the baseline.

I suspect that it is highly school dependent, but I agree to discuss with the school in advance. For example, with the financial downturn of the last 2 years, Andover re-evaluated anyone who asked, and adjusted aid accordingly, in line with their need blind policy. This resulted in many previously full pay students receiving financial aid.

We were, at one school, WL for FA. The letter clearly said, it is highly unlikely for you to get FA in subsequent years.
All schools will re-evaluate, and many students, not just at Andover, received FA that didn’t before with the financial downturn. It’s a matter of letting the school know in advance AND knowing upfront the exact policy.

Thanks everyone. I will keep them advised.
