What happens to FAFSA when I get a foreign scholarship?

This is my first time on here so bear with me haha

My parents are immigrants and I’m a dual citizen so I recently got accepted into a foreign country’s scholarship program. Does this technically make me an international student and in what way will this affect my FAFSA financial aid?

Also if the scholarship and the financial aid end up more than covering tuition and other fees what happens to the rest of the money?

Thanks for the help and sorry if I did anything wrong lol

If you are attending a U.S. college, your need based aid cannot exceed the cost of attendance. If you get a scholarship from your country and plan to use it for U.S. college study, you will be required to report that scholarship to your college. This outside scholarship will reduce your financial need, and will probably therefore reduce your need based aid.

The college isn’t going to give you need based aid, plus your outside scholarship that will be in excess of the cost of attendance.

FAFSA is an application, not aid. The aid actually comes from the college or through the college (federal loans, Pell grants). At some foreign schools you can use federal grants and loans. You’ll have to look up your foreign school to see if it is a participant. It will have a school code to input on the FAFSA.

If the foreign school is a participant, it would know how to award aid so that you do not exceed COA.
