What if I am waitlisted?

FWIW, I 100% agree with LLNYer’s posts #17 & 19. Just trying to temper expectations. Don’t want to hear “but I did all that and still didn’t get in” on A11.

And I fully agree with @Sevendad, most of the time it won’t work

Reading all these and a post somewhere listing how ridiculously large the wait pool could be, if we get both acceptances and wait lists M10, then we may ask the school to remove our name from the wait pool, just to have a closure and to love the school that loves the kid. What do you think?
Of course, if we get nothing but wait lists, we would be composing love letters.

@payn4ward: I think the closure thing is good (and necessary for some people)…not to mention that it at least reduces the waitlist pool odds for people who may not have any acceptances in hand. And is good etiquette.

That said, if you love a school that W/L you, I would at least ask where kid stands (perhaps not on M10 or 11, though…as AOs are invariably inundated with calls/emails at that point). They might not even have that good a picture until A10, at which point your deposit is due so…

I guess I should consider ourselves blessed that we never had to deal with the limbo of W/Ls…my girls were either in or out (and both got their share of each!).

It wS only because on connections my husband has at one of the schools

I was waitlisted Lawrenceville, but as an incoming junior. Considering there are fewer applications, but also fewer spots, how do you think the whole waitlist situation is? I would love feedback.

Also, I would be a day student, do you think that changes anything?

Don’t count on it. Your chances of getting off the waitlist is really really small.

When do you find out if you made it off the waitlist?

Varies. They’ll send you an email or call you or the like. It’s when a spot opens up, so most likely around April 10, when people make their choices. There are possibilities after that though.

@prepster1234 - Usually after A10- but it is possible to get a call before then. Schools will notify you via email when the WL is closed. Good luck

How would I know if I am on the waiting list or a denial to The Lawrenceville School?

It’s on the portal.

It’s on the portal. @anotherteenager

My son got waitlisted at all schools he applied to. They all sound similar in terms of setting expectations on getting off waitlist except Lawrenceville who made it pretty clear, that based upon historical trends, it is very unlikely that an opening from waitlist will materialize. However, Lawrenceville is the only school who also sent a decision letter to the applicant’s parent. I thought that was a nice touch. Now, looking back, I regret that I didn’t take my son to visit any of the schools he applied to, he did all skype interviews as we are from a small town in Midwest. I actually have a business trip coming in 2 weeks to NJ and was hoping to bring him along to visit schools as he will be on spring break. Does this seem like a terrible idea now that he is waitlisted? Will school be open to “Losers” like us? I understand that some schools have revisit days during the last week of March. Please advise, especially Mrnephew, you are so knowledgeable when it comes to boarding schools  Thanks.

It wouldn’t necessarily be a bad idea. I doubt that the schools would let you visit and tour on the revisit days, but you definitely could schedule an interview and tour if you plan on reapplying next year.

Unfortunately, the chances of the waitlist being utilized is pretty low, so I don’t think that you should expect to come off of it, but visiting is a great idea if you plan on reapplying next year.

Thank you mrnephew. I don’t expect him coming off the waitlist at all given how selective these schools are. I am actually quite glad that I can have my son at home for at least one more year. We are fortunate that there is an excellent public school option for 9th grade but would still like to keep options open for next year as far as reapply goes. In addition to not visiting schools at all, requesting FA probably also made things unfavorable for us. I also felt that my income is at an “awkward” level, not rich enough to cut a blank check and not poor enough to win schools over. This is probably the true definition of “middle class”. sorry for the vent.
