What constitutes the section leader for band?

Do you actually need to be proclaimed the "section leader" or is it just something that is implied?

Do you actually need to be proclaimed the "section leader" or is it just something that is implied?

In what, it depends,it is proclaimed if you're putting it on an app.

A section leader is usually appointed by the conductor.

It depends.

Marching band section leaders tend to be a lot more important than their counterparts in concert or jazz bands, reason being simply the amount of time and effort usually put into marching band. In my school, marching band is the only ensemble that has section leaders at all; they're just not necessary for the other ensembles.
The way section leaders are decided is different for each band. In my MB, there is no official appointment of section leaders, but there's no ambiguity. The section leader is kind of the de facto leader of that particular instrument section: the one who takes responsibility for the others (usually turns out to be the person with most experience); however, he/she is acknowledged by the band director and in turn by the entire band. Meanwhile, some bands actually hold auditions or interviews for section leader.

In marching band, you're section leader if you're given the title by the director. In concert band, you can call yourself "section leader" if you're first chair in the section. You probably can't put down section leader for concert band if you don't have chair placements or you're the only person playing your instrument.

LOL pork, too discouraged by what I say on AIM? :P Gotta get second opinions on the forum ahhaha
