What is a troll?

<p>I know this is probably a very stupid question, and the term "troll" is used frequently on this forum, but I'm not sure what it actually means. I have a broad idea, but could anyone help me out?</p>

<p>■■■■■–someone who knows better but puts question out there to see what response it draws. As a made-up question, person, situation.
Sometimes the answers are philosophical so keep getting answered even though people know the original poster didn’t have a real problem. Some are made up situations that just can’t be true so will reek of “■■■■■”.</p>

<p>One who purposely and deliberately (that purpose usually being self-amusement) starts an argument in a manner which attacks others on a forum without in any way listening to the arguments proposed by his or her peers. He will spark of such an argument via the use of ad hominem attacks (i.e. ‘you’re nothing but a fanboy’ is a popular phrase) with no substance or relevence to back them up as well as straw man arguments, which he uses to simply avoid addressing the essence of the issue.</p>
