My daughter included the fact that she swam with her HS and the Y until 10th grade in her college application.
Recently we have been receiving mail from "CaptainU’ saying that a coached has searched for her. She is not a recruited athlete. Is captainU legit? My concern is that there is no record of her in captainU and the college may think she is lying even she not. Is there anyway to find out who searched for DD?
Somehow they got your contact information.
With our club soccer team, the team manager gave out each players’ contact info, and I started receiving emails saying a coach was searching for my son. I just unsubcribed.
Captain u is an athletic recruiting service. Usually when you attend an event they get your info and set up an account for you. “Coaches” then search your profile. Mainly it is to send camp invites. I get several emails a week. Never checked the site. I wouldn’t worry about it.
I don’t think coaches typically would use this as their primary means of researching. These are likely mass searches by college coaches that you or I have probably never heard of. I think they allow a free signup, but that’s going to just get more spam. There is no reason for a school/coach to research an athlete’s athletic background unless they were trying to recruit them.
We gave it a try, since a club coach signed us up. As I recall, it was “free” but there was a pay wall for a certain level of service – like finding out who searched. We were searched by colleges that I had never heard of and for the wrong gender team. A lot of the recruiting services are a way to get parents to part with their money. There are better ways to part with your money, IMHO.
@annamom, no there is nothing to worry about - colleges are not going to expect any documentation of a kid’s sports activities unless they are a recruited athlete or their sports achievement is something similarly noteworthy, and the colleges will not check CaptainU to see if she’s in their database.
The messages you are getting are probably just saying that your daughter was found in a search that a coach made on Captain U - she was one of the many people listed in the search results. I doubt the coach was searching for her specifically. The coach is probably just looking for people to send camp invites to (make money). If you really want to know who is doing the search because you’re curious, you could pay the $20 for a month to find out, but since she hasn’t been a swimmer since 10th grade, I doubt it’s worth it.
The $20 a month is well worth it if you have a plan. I have used the sight for the last year and it has been a great way for me to get my daughter exposure. We sit down once a week and email coaches. Our responses have been great!! To say the least. She has been added to 48 college prospecting list. From NAIA To Division 1 schools. My daughter would like to play basketball at the next level. I Know I could not have gotten this kind of exposure sending out resumes. The site may not be for everyone but if your willing to put the time in it’s a great resource.
It’s mostly invitation to ID camps that require payment to attend. Water of time and money.
