What is ESOL??

I got my offer recently, but it mentions something about ESOL.
I'm wondering what's the standard to decide whether a student need to get into this program or not?? I think my test scores are not so bad as I need to attend in a special program for English....
Can anyone help me with it??
Thank you very much!

ESOL is instruction aimed at improving the English language skills of students whose first language is not English. ESOL encompasses speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing in English.

[ESOL Program: University of Rochester](http://writing.rochester.edu/ESOL/index.html)

Generally, your TOEFL score needs to be at least 100 or above for you be considered fluent enough in English to succeed at an American university.

Another possibility is that the verbal and/or writing score on your SAT (or the reading, writing and/or English language score on your ACT) was considered low enough to demonstrate a identifiable weakness in your English proficiency.

If you think your English language skills are adequate, you can contact the ESOL department and ask for a reconsideration of the ESOL requirement.

Thank you. My TOEFL is 107, SAT writing 660 but the essay part is 7, so maybe it’s because of the essay…
