I’m just curious to know what kind of curve there was for other people’s Orgo classes. My professor said there will be some sort of “scaling” though I do not know what that entails. I would say just from my observations that most of the class has B’s and C’s. I calculated my grade and its a 76% I’m just hoping I can get a B-. I feel confident that I will do better in the course next semester. This semester was just awful for me and I’ve now learned what I should not do :l
From my observations with ORGO, you either get it or you don’t. If you happened to be one of the lucky who gets it it comes easy to you. Don’t get me wrong, you still need to study your butt off, but the result is a good grade. But I’ve seen kids that are really really smart stumble on ORGO. My friend’s daughter who went to Cornell and got As in everything else had a really hard time with ORGO. She had to take it several times and finally got a B- and was extatic. She did everything right, she just couldn’t get it.
D. never mentioned any curves. Her goal was always the same for ALL of her classes, Orgo or Paper Making Class (both were very very time consuming).
She has put more efforts into Orgo than many other classes. She mentioned that sometime before exams she would have to lay off work for other classes (which was very unusual for her). Most Orgo exams were taking her at least 30 hours to prepare.
Anyway, my advice is to forget the curve and focus on the plan for getting an A in this class. Depending on your personal ability this class may require more effort than other classes (but again, D. mentioned that there were some with preference for Orgo over Gen. Chem.). Your personal plan based on your ability is the only important thing, forget the curve and what everybody else is doing, it may not be relevent to you.
Get it on not is NOT acceptable. YOU MUST GET IT, period.
My orgo class was not curved. There is also no “orgo for pre-meds” at Brown like many other schools have (and even we have for physics), only “orgo for orgo majors” so getting a B in the class was well beyond what the MCAT required. I’m pretty sure that only knowing MCAT level orgo would have actually resulted in failing the courses I took.
Guys I got a C+. Guess there wasn’t much of a curve :l Oh well, hopefully I can get an A next semester. I know I am capable of it. I will manage my time better.
Organic Chem is a subject that needs well plan ahead and you’d need to study “smart”, not just “hard”. You’d need to understand topic each week and never never fell behind. Once you find you don’t understand, seek help immediately, office hours, TA, tutoring, whatever help you can find. As others posts said, Organic Chem is a topic that you need to “get it” in your brain, which only comes when you understand the material and practicing on whiteboard each week (which my son did).
How many exams did you have in your organic chem class? and did you score below the class average in each exam? If that’s the case, pretty much there is no way to pull yourself out of the hole in the Final since organic chem cannot be crammed at the last minute. I’d assume it’s Organic Chem 1, which usually starts off reviewing basic stuff in 1st month so exam1 is normally pretty easy. It gets exponentially harder into 2nd and 3rd months.
My son just completed his Organic Chem1 with an A. Syllabus has the grading guideline - if your average score is around 1 SD above the class average from all the exams (3 exams + final) it’s an A. The class averages for 3 exams went from 77 to 67 down to 52.
