Yes. That’s my question also!
IF you are applying to 11, 12 or PG - please check the hard copies of the applications. You can PM me for where to look on the forms.
@khanshaheb Well, you or your teacher can email or call the school(s) your are applying to and ask if the paper has to be handwritten. My kid submitted a typed paper, graded, with teacher’s comments. That was two application cycles ago.
@GoatMama sent you a message sir/madam. Please, give me a reply
@Golfgr8 No sir! I’m applying to GRADE 9!
Deerfield specifically asks for teacher comments as well as a grade. PAA says something similar. Neither says anything about handwritten. They are interested in composition, thought process, etc, not penmanship. But definitely call or email the school to verify if you feel unsure.
You may have to ask your teacher to write some comments if all you have is a grade.
My school uses Google Classroom, so comments are not in a place where it is easy to get them in a screenshot or anything…
One kid from last year applied to a school where they have applicants write an essay on-the-spot. Not sure which school it is…but that’s interesting. Has anyone experienced this?
St Andrew’s does that. But it is hardly an essay. More like prompts for short answers so they can get to know you. It keeps the kids occupied while AOs talk to parents, too.
At least one of the local day schools here requires an on-the-spot essay. There’s no time limit for it.
Middlesex did what @CaliMex is describing when my DD was applying.
I doubt the MX on-site essay carries much weight. Interviews are optional there!
Both the writing and the comment can be typed. We submitted a pdf download from turnitin with typed grade and comments from the instructor.

The graded writing sample was a typed essay that was printed out, teacher wrote comments/feedback on it. We scanned it and uploaded that for the submission.
You need to print that out and ask the teacher to write those comment and resubmit. My eighth grader also uses google docs/classroom and doesn’t normally receive a hard copy with written comments on it but teacher did so for this purpose.
