I’m curious because I’m considering colleges to pursue a masters in conservation.
I’m interested in what a masters thesis would entail?
I’m currently completing a bachelors in environmental science, and I already have an idea of what research project I would like to perform and write about.
Does the college allow you to pick anything you like? Or do they provide a list of approved topics you have to choose from?
The answer is both and neither. Your supervisor will at the least have to approve your project (which is sensible, b/c you may not be the best judge of how achievable your research project is). Most often the student and supervisor work together to shape a project that is interesting to the student, appropriate to the course, is likely to provide interesting/meaningful outcomes and is achievable. The supervisor may already have projects scoped out (possibly even with funding). If you apply to do a research masters (vs a taught masters- many places, incl UMASS offer the choice), your Statement of Purpose will include your proposed research, and will be part of evaluating you as an applicant.
