^I was simply responding to the ridiculous claims by other people that SAT is the most important part of your app

no, it is not always 90 pts =(...i was just trying to give an example on how an admission officer will not base his/her decision on solely a 90pts difference

I wish test scores were more important. My 31 ACT (2150 SAT) looks a whole lot better than my 3.35. Haha. Generally, I think GPA is much more important, as many schools are eliminating their test-score requirement. Oh well, I'm sure my ACT will get me into some schools that would never accept me based on grades. x) I guess I'm one of those lazy students.

So you're saying 4 years of hard work/all nighters/taking 15 AP classes counts for nothing if compared to a stupid 4 hour test? I'm sorry, but I have met with personal admissions officers, and trust me, SATs aren't important as you all think...

No one said that, and I do agree with most of the people here when they say that both SATs and GPAs are extremely important. No one here outright said that SATs or GPAs are the ONLY things that count for something in admissions.

Still, the SATs are a lot more standardized, so it's easier to tell a person's abilities since we're all playing on a level field. For GPAs, a lot of factors can distort a person's abilities. Maybe a teacher hates a student on a personal level, or perhaps there are teachers who simply DON'T give A's (they exist). Lots of kids also BS most of their stuff in their classes, and, depending on the teacher, will get credit for stuff that they didn't really "work" on. I'm sure that such circumstances do NOT make up the majority of the GPAs earned in high school, but they still exist and they still do affect the applications of a lot of students.

^^Still, SAT doesn't really measure intelligence... I know plenty of really smart kids who don't do very well on SATs because they aren't good test takers

Clearly, the SATs.

:D

Hey - it even reaffirms that men are better than women!

Hehehehehe.

hahaha fizix that's awesome...

i beg to (respectfully, of course) differ with fhimas, though. =p

Haha - well anatomy doesn't lie:

Hehe ;-)

Adcoms know that the SATs are meaningless, but they still but a large weight on them to look good in the equally ridiculous US News & World Report rankings so that they will get more applicants and get a higher yield and move up on the ranking etc. SATs measure only test taking skills. Additionally it has been proven that kids who learn for the point of learning tend to score lower on the SAT than kids who learn as a means to anend. However, the general consensus in everyhting I've read is that the transcript is more important.

I think an unweighted GPA with a school profile for each class is just as "standard" as the SATs. Personally, I think GPA is more important. It shows a good work ethic. The SATs on the other hand, only show teast-taking ability (in my opinion). Nonetheless, both are imprtant.

Haha - well the google fight * was * between p-e-n-i-s and vagina.

of course gpa. gpa counts the most in the college process. sat counts a lot also but sat is a lot easier. there are people with 65-70 avgs in my school and still gets 2100s on sat and 30 on act. so gpa counts the most.

the most important thing is that they match up...great SAT w/bad GPA=lazy student. great GPA w/bad SAT=grade inflation...consistency is key. but SAT is standardized, so i'd agree with abiste.

I'm pretty sure admission officers are more sophisticated than that... They look at a students surroundings, including school... Just because someone has a bad SAT but great gpa does not mean grade inflation!

And I've seen people with good SAT scores and relatively poor GPAs because sometimes stuff just happens in life.

As I said, the "poor test-taker" excuse is pitiful unless your school doesn't give tests; even then, have fun at college where a final exam is easily worth 50% of your grade. If anything, you should be thankful that SAT scores are only about 30~40% of the application.

^If you are so smart, why don't you post on this thread?

Um, more like 20%... Trust me, I have a famous college counselor and I've talked to representatives from harvard, columbia, MIt, etc... Sorry buddy, Please cite your sources next time buddy

maybe he's just trying to make you feel better

^Maybe hes not...

Can you please cite a RELIABLE source (from officer) that says SAT scores are 30-40% of your app?

the answer would be that in some instances its worth 20% and in others 30-40%, its not like most colleges use a weighted numerical scale so realize that measuring something qualitative with a percentage is ludicrous, it really depends on your circumstance as well, for example, would any of u think a kid in the 9% of his class with 11 b's in hs a 3.59 uw gpa out of state from va but a 1500/2260 would get into unc chapel hill with a likely letter? ur reading his post and they dug my non-motherwithcancer circumstances. football junior year any1?
