Is there a town or anything within walking distance of the campus in case you want to get away for a few hours on the weekend?

Do many students have cars?

There is a cute LITTLE town, nothing else. Good if you like to ski.

1) There is nothing to do in town except a movie theater and a bar.

2) Yes, a lot of students have cars.

The town is less than a 5-minute walk from campus. There are a bunch of bars and restaurants (see: Middlebury Vermont Restaurants Middlebury VT dining, restaurants Vermont Restaurant and Dining Guide Middlebury VT restaurants), grocery, clothing, and hardware stores, some craft stores, a bookstore, the Middlebury Inn, a couple of liquor stores, etc. They're putting in a new Staples out by the Courtyard Marriott. Middlebury is a smallish town. There are more options (like malls) in Burlington.

I have to disagree with bigp9998 about there being nothing to do except go to the theater or the bar. I really like small New England towns in general, and Middlebury is no exception. Favorite things to do in town:
- Grab one of the window seats at Carol's Hungry Mind Cafe on a cold winter day, get a pot of tea, watch people walk by, do some homework.
- Browse the bookstore for something to read, give as a gift. They also often have awesome deals on sheet music and CDs.
- Head up to the co-op for snacks, chocolate, other deliciousness.
- Hit up the farmers' market for cheese, bread, and the best cookies ever (picnic made from farmers' market stuff = awesome date for two, or way to spend Saturday afternoon for a group).
- Get movies and a pint of Ben and Jerry's from Waterfront videos on weekend nights when you just want to be lazy with friends.
- Breakfast at the bagel place on Sunday mornings when you want to not think about all the work you have ahead of you.
- Go to Noonie's for the Purple's Pleasure sandwich... Makes me hungry thinking about it.
- Go to Tullie and Marie's or the Storm Cafe for lunch - hard to go wrong at either.
- Head to the Middlebury Market and Cafe for creemees (Vermont word for soft serve) when it get's hot.
- Get my Christmas shopping done in town, at the Ski Rack, Frog Hollow, etc...
- Also not actually in town, but there's a path called the TAM (trail around Middlebury) that makes a circle around the entire town and is great to run on (it comes right by campus).

I'm studying abroad right now, and just thinking about all the good food and things to do back in Middlebury makes me miss it. 51 Main St that the college opened up as a student hangout/bar/performance venue didn't really take off last semester, but maybe it's gotten better now... Also, the town theater was renovated and probably has shows and whatnot going on now. A lot of students stick to campus, but I think they're missing out on a lot of what you can get out of going to Midd. Their loss.
