Do we need a gold medal in scholastic art and writing?
Can you elaborate on your question more?
Like most discipline-specific colleges, CMU’s school of design is looking for prospects who are passionate about what they do (specifically if that passion ties into design) and show the potential to thrive in an environment like CMU’s. Although national awards like Scholastics and YoungArts look good on a resume, they know that not all applicants participated to attain those achievements. Some may not have known about those contests, or some may not have had the means to participate. Awards probably give you brownie points, though, and show that you’re active in the community. That being said, anyone can show up with an amazing portfolio without too many awards and have a shot at getting in. There are many opportunities to showcase your passions and potential – the CommonApp essay, the Why CMU essay, the portfolio, the on-campus portfolio review and interview – to the school of design’s admissions committee. Awards, like the other factors just listed, simply supplement the application. In other words, the package is what you put in it.
I hope that helps!
