What is success?

Success is managing to not void your bowels in death.

being financially rich.

Success is when you accomplish your goals.

That’s really broad, I’m referring to the kind of success that people refer to after having going to college, getting jobs, etc. I am wondering if the “successful people” are just happy people in general (or rich).

To me, success is working a job that I enjoy (or at least don’t completely hate), that pays me well enough to take care of my financial responsibilities and leaves me with enough time and money to pursue my hobbies and interests. Work to live, not live to work.

@prothero - I know you’re looking for a specific answer, but you’re not going to get one, because as you can tell by your thread, success means different things to different people

I think the “successful people” are just those happy in general. lots of rich people aren’t happy. but when you don’t have to worry about money, it is easier to be happy because living in poverty is beyond stressful.

many people don’t care about their jobs that much; they need income to support themselves and their family so they can live comfortably and have the time/money to do whatever it is they like - this the “work to live” mentality splash7 described.

others are really into their work; their jobs aren’t perfect, but they enjoy doing them. I believe the highest job satisfaction rates are in professions where you directly help people, like firefighters, nurses, etc. these professions don’t necessarily have the highest salaries either. These types would feel “unsuccessful” if they weren’t doing something they felt was worthy of their time.

some people dislike their jobs but they enjoy having a high income, so are willing to put in long hours. my dad worked in big law (corp law) for years; didn’t like it, but was making great money and didn’t mind the long hours. For him, the long-run payoff was worth it. He would’ve felt unsuccessful otherwise.

i don’t think any of these types are better than another. I’m just generalizing about a few common mindsets and different ideas of “success”.

Success is subjective.

For me:
NASA = success
Criminal World Domination = Mega Success

haha right now for me, passing finals and making it through xmas with my annoying relatives without trying to murder anyone and pass it off as a freak blender incident = SUCCESS!

You’re right…I guess the better question would be “in what direction do most people tend to go towards?”. I’m pretty direction-less in college and I’m scared ****less because of it.

Success, in my eyes, is nothing less than world domination. Hell, universe domination. Hell, domination of everything. And I won’t stop until I get there.
