I'm interested in attending UT and i just found out there are seven colleges in the St.George Campus. I was wondering which one is the best for Life science majors and also have a nice dorm situation. I want to be as near to downtown as possible. Also any quick and honest facts about each campus would be helpful! Thank you.

The short answer is none of them are any better than the others. The “colleges” at uoft are frankly administrative units used to divide the huge student population. Essentially, if you live in residence you will live in your colleges dorm, but that is about it. Day to day life at uoft is not affected at all by which college you are in. There are no special courses or anything that are exclusive to students of a particular college. You see your college registrar for administrative stuff and some colleges offer a few different scholarships, but that is about it. The collegiate system is really much more tradition rather than actual function anymore, since originally UofT was a confederation of smaller Toronto universities (ie. Victoria College, St. Micheal’s college, King’s College-which later was renamed University College). Originally many of these colleges were religious (eg. St. Michael’s was protestant and I believe Trinity was catholic), where as University colleges was the founding non religious college. However none of the colleges nowadays are directly associated with any religion. Outside of frosh week there is really no connection between you and your college. If you plan to live in residence I suggest that you just pick the college which you feel has the best dorms. Or pick the one which has the architecture you like most (university, st michael’s, victoria and trinity are old and woodsworth, innis and new college are newer). Even the different scholarship options between the colleges are very minor. Frankly by the end of your undergrad you will likely have had multiple classes in pretty much every one of these colleges.

To add, all 7 of the colleges are in the downtown campus. There really aren’t any colleges that are more downtown then any other. They are all located in a box between St.George street, College street, Spadina street and Queens park street. None of the colleges is more than a 5-10 minute walk to any of the others. The main life sciences building is Sidney Smith (located on St. George street) and I suppose that the closest college to it is New College, although Woodsworth and Innis are close. Still even the most distant colleges from SS (St. Michael’s and Victoria) are only like a 8 minutes walk away.

In terms of dormitories I personally like Woodsworth’s dorms because they are new, and many have a huge ceiling to to floor window in the kitchen which is nice. They also are some of the cheaper dormitories at UofT which would personally be the most important factor for me. I price is not a factor i believe Chestnut residence at uoft is the most luxurious as it is a converted hotel.

Is it possible for you to see the campus before you make your decision?
