I am a senior in high school who has applied to many good business schools like UIUC, Michigan, USC, Georgetown, Berkeley, among others.

I've been thinking recently about what I want to do with my life and I've had 2 recent ideas about what I would dream about doing and I'd like to know if any of you have ideas about which major I should go for and what I should be thinking about during school.

Sorry if my 2 ideas are completely different but I think they are business related and if you have different answers for each idea that's fine and I appreciate it.

Work in sports business, like the NFL, MLB, NBA, or even NCAA. I'm a huge sports guy so if those were the business I work for that would be great and it would also be good if at some point I would work more hands on with the team (obvious and high up examples are president and GM), but just getting involved in prof sports business is enough for now

Working in the business side of Television, like working for CBS, FOX, or a cable network. Dream would be working up to be in a decison making position or an analytical position with some say..like deciding which shows to renew/cancel and how to organize the TV schedule and things of that nature

Any help would be appreciated thanks

Those are nice “dreams” but unfortunately right now that’s all you are doing is “dreaming”. There’s a difference between a dream and a vision, one means you are asleep (unaware) and the other means you are wide awake and can see clearly down the road.

The sports business and cable network business (entertainment business) has a TON of different types of positions available and it would require you starting with an internship in an office role and working your way up within the industry.

The roles you listed for the sports side are going to be out of reach “for the most part” unless you have some sort of equity within the team or are working with the player development side (coach, waterboy, clean the locker rooms, etc).

On the TV side, that is possible but again you are going to have to work your way up the ladder to even get a chance for those positions.

The positions you are seeking are extremely limited, what do I mean? The competition to obtain those positions will be extremely high due to the ultra LOW number of positions available and that will EVER be available.

That’s reality, now, to properly address this you should do the following:

1.) Pick another primary career target and allow that to be the MAIN ONE.

2.) Still try to get into the entertainment business positions on the SIDE, and understand something here, you are going to have to know some people within those positions within the industry to get you IN cause other than that, you are pretty much screwed getting that high up the ladder. You can work within the entertainment business in general in an office role, but getting that high up requiring an ultra network.

If you just go to any of their websites (nba careers, nfl career etc etc…) you can see open positions and what they are looking for. That will be a good start.

If you want to dig a bit deeper, find someone who works for the company in a position you will ultimately want to be in and reach out to them. Some of them will be happy to help or give you some advice if you reach the right person.

I know companies like NBC, CBS, ABC all hire analysts out of college so if you intend to continue studying business you can apply for those positions as a good way to get your foot in the door.
