I am an older student half way done with my bachelor's degree (completed 61 units at a community college) that now wants to transfer to a university that offers an accounting bachelor's degree online. Since I am in the middle of nowhere (Central California), online is my only option, but I am having a tough time finding the university I really want to attend. I am looking at three universities right now, but two have the degree I want and the third one I would have to compromise on the degree. I am actually enrolled to start at Brandman University this August on their BBA in Accounting. I am also looking at Golden Gate University's BSB in Accounting, and I like their history of accounting/taxation degrees. I also looked at Northeastern University, but the online program they offer that comes the closest to what I want is a BS in Finance and Accounting Management, so I would have to settle for a different degree, which I also like finance, but I am looking specifically to accounting right now. Washington State also offers an accounting degree online, but since I have to pay out-of-state tuition, it makes it very expensive.
Therefore, this is my dilemma. I have heard and read so many opinions but no consensus.
Please drop a line if you have something CONSTRUCTIVE to say!
THANK YOU!!

What about one from a CSU or UC? I think that would be CONSIDERABLY more prestigious and probably less expensive than some of the other places you’re considering. If you’re in CA, you should be a resident? You could commute with or without an on-line portion.

Thank you for the reply HImom. I do have CSU Fresno about an hour away from where I live. Because I work full-time and I have a family to provide for, 1 hour commute each way every time I go to class it can be very draining and expensive. Also, because of budget crisis here in California all education have experienced major cut backs, and night classes were the first ones to go. I completed over 60 units at a local community college, and I am not completely finished with all my GE requirements to CSU, but having a tough time to find the remaining GE classes there before I could transfer to CSU Fresno. They also eliminated a great amount of night classes. I prefer to pay a little more and have classes available when I need them.
I have researched CSUs and UCs to see if any of them offer online degrees and it seems like none of them do at this point.

Western Governors University?
A co-worker just finished her accounting degree through a university in Colorado. I don’t remember the name of the school, though.

I’d check with where you might be thinking of wanting to work & double-check that they respect the U you are considering getting your degree from so that it’s seen as better than a diploma mill. There are more than you might realize that have that unfortunate rep & it would seem a sad waste of resources to spend your time & money getting such a degree. I had a friend who taught at a U – after teaching there two years, she STRONGLY recommended that I never have anyone I care about attend that U that she had a very poor impression of. They have good PR/Marketing but not much else.

zeebamom, I looked at WGU, but it doesn’t quite appeal to me. It seems like a decent university, but it is not quite what I am looking for. Thank you for your recommendation.
HImom, that is very good advice. I am leaning towards Golden Gate University because of their tracking record here in California, and because they cater to working students. They have been doing online degrees for a long time, and they seem to be a very good fit. I checked with IRS and they said they would hire candidates from GGU.
