Hey everyone,
I just graduated from high school and got through B.Sing and procrastinating my way through everything with average B grade with a couple of As and few Cs (GPA 3.5) but I am now entering CSU San Marcos. CSU advisors recommended these classes below for me. In Addition, my parents want me to drop Spanish altogether and take it during the summer or take it at a community college. What would be the best class schedule for person such as myself to take and maintain excellent grades to get hold a spot in the Nursing Program? P.S: I know i don't go to the nursing program until i finish my prerequisites
Classes I was Recommended: (Are any of these classes hard btw?)
Statistics - 3 Units
Critical Thinking - 3 units
General Education - 3 units
Spanish 101 at CSU - 4 units or Spanish 101 at CC - 5 units
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.
To be honest, it looks like a pretty easy schedule. Stats is one of the easier Math classes, Critical Thinking is a common CSU GE requirement, Spanish 101 an easy class if you have taken Spanish in HS and what other GE are you considering?
Did they give you a Course MAP or outline of the courses need for Pre-Nursing? I have found this list of courses on the San Marcos Website:
https://www.csusm.edu/nursing/documents/15_16%20pre-nursing%20GE%20planner.pdf
According the planner, you need to take the first 4 classes your freshman year (Oral Communication, Written Communication, Stats and Critical Thinking). Based on your GPA in these classes, you are then eligible to take the Pre-nursing core classes in your Sophomore year.
Nursing will be a hard major if you are not science oriented with Biology/Chemistry courses required to apply to the nursing program. How well did you do in these type of courses in HS?
I have never taken Spanish in HS but they did give me a course planner of what subject to take and I am currently following what it recommends. Moreover, when it came to biology I took it freshmen and had a B while I struggled in chemistry during my sophomore year but still had a low B in HS. I do plan to improve my habits since I know high school and college are completely different but do you think I might still struggle with just 14 units due to my past procrastinating history in high school. In Addition, should I take the Spanish at a cc in order to save money on commuting? Thank you for replying, I really appreciate it Gumbymom.
Usually summer courses at a CC are 6-8 weeks long vs. regular semester classes of 15-16 weeks at CSUSM. If you have no prior background in Spanish, I would take it at CSUSM since you are already on campus for your other classes. Summer may be too intense for a beginner. You would be better off taking an easy GE at a CC in the summer.
14 units is about average. If you feel overwhelmed your first semester, you can always drop a class unless you financial aid specifies you need to maintain full-time status of 12 units or more.
Since you have 3 unit GE on you list, try to take something that would interest you. I have always found I tried harder and did better in classes that I was interested in taking not just required.
Best of luck to you.
You must have take some language in HS to meet the a-g requirements.
As a Californian, understanding a little Spanish will serve you well regardless of your career choice. If you plan to learn and later use the language, take it during the normal school year.
unless you are working or in a very difficult major, 4 semester classes is a pretty light load. You need to average 15 units per semester to earn the 120 units required for most majors in 4 years. I’d add another class from the list linked above - maybe psych?
