What is the deal with sororities?

So I am from New York, and from what I can tell, rushing is alot different and more intense down south, especially in Texas (good thing :)) I know everybody always says, get letters for recommendation in early, but what does that mean? Do you need a member of each potential sorority to write you a letter? And when is rush week exactly? Any information would be helpful :)

Yes, it is intense at UT… and yes, you need letters from alums of the individual sororities. Here’s a link to the UT panhellenic site… [University of Texas at Austin - Office of the Dean of Students - Sorority and Fraternity Life - Joining an Organization - UPC Recruiting](http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/sfl/join_upc_recruit.php)

Your letters of recommendation come from alumnus of the organizations that are represented at UT. The best way to obtain these are from your local Panhellenic Alumni Council. Just google your city and “Panhellenic Council” and you should get a hit. Contact them and they will get you in contact with the sorority women that will write these letter for you. Start now. They are due May 1. And it takes time. May rec writers write a multitude of letters and they need time to get them out. Also, go to this thread…it will help you

How do we get these recommendations if we don’t know anyone from there, and also is it still possible to get in without them, as i am an international student.
