This is my third math course at Tulane, and every single time I take a math course here, it's a horrific experience. Why is this? Is the math department so bad that they can't hire competent professors?

Could you please break it down a little bit of what a horrific experience is?..also, what kind of math you are talking about?..is it Topology, Calculus, Linear Algebra?..thanks.

How large are the classes? Do you have access to the professor? TA’s? Will the college provide a tutor?

I don’t know what to tell you. My D’s housemate is a math major, as is her roommate from freshman year, and neither of them seem to have any issues. Maybe bad luck? I know there was an issue with having to add sections last fall (wasn’t it last fall? Or was it the fall before that?) and some of the grad students teaching were not too good, especially one. Dean McLaren stepped in and fixed the situation. Maybe you should talk to him about your issues with the courses and how they are taught.

My S who is majoring in BME also has minor in Math and never said anything about the classes, professors, curriculum, etc. In fact, he has been getting all As in Math (and other BME classes) and maintaining high GPA in honor programs. So, I am curious as what seems to be the problems. Kindly, let us know so perhaps we can learn something…thanks a bunch.

I’m a math major, senior this year, and have had only one unpleasant experience of all the math courses I’ve taken so far. Consider looking at ratemyprofessor when selecting your courses and definitely ask people who have taken the course before about their professors if that’s an option. Most professors and graduate students I know in the math department are very good instructors but there are a select few who you should definitely avoid if possible.

I would only add to yiruma’s comment that there are very few schools similar to Tulane’s size (or larger, of course) that do not have a few professors people would rather avoid. It is great when the best scholars are also excellent teachers, but alas this cannot always be true.

I don’t know what y’all are saying but Tulane’s math department does suck. Alot. My friends and I all have different professors for calc, yet all of them do not speek english, are incomprehensible and cannot teach at a level that the students can understand. This seems to be the general consensus among the freshman class, as we all believe that if we were to switch classes we would end up with a different horrible professor. …and ratemyprofessors.com doesn’t help because the math department changes professors before classes begin

JRACER: Ok…I hear you. The professors with limited english and/or broken english teaching CALC at Tulane. Perhaps you guys need to get together with the Head of Math dept and try to find the best solution ever. I hope the Math Dept Head would read this stuff in here.

i had an american grad student for calculus who i felt did a fine job at teaching the class. i really don’t know what you guys are talking about…
