what is the last date sat for national merit?
I want to retake my sat subjects 640 bio m 730's on both maths before the early admit dates but i also need to get another sat in(1850.) I should have no problem getting the score for national merit the second time provided i actually study and get enough sleep but i am worried i will mess it up and not get at least the 1960 required if i take the December date. i don't need the sat for colleges(34 act).
sparknotes; is December the last date for national merit?

Sounds like December.

http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf

Yes, Dec, but I wouldn’t wait til then.

Take both Maths on the Oct date and then take the SAT for the Nov date AND dec date…just be sure.

also is 1960 the required confirming score, i read that somewhere but im not sure

yoskis…Historically, 1960 has been the confirming score using NMSC’s formula of M+CR plus (Multiple Choice sub-score from Writing section x 10). Generally, if your overall SAT score exceeds 1960 you’ve probably met the verifying score using their formula as well, but just to be sure you need to drill down into your Score Details to find your Multiple Choice sub-score (not the number of MC questions you got correct, but the actual sub-score). Multiply that number by 10 and add the result to your M+CR combined score.

You may have seen some folks use an SAT score of 2000 as a target just to give themselves a little bit of wiggle room.

Yes, many of us use 2000 as a desired minimum just in case the minimum rises or the odd Writing score calculation doesn’t “add up”.

I am just bumping this b/c i don’t want to start a new thread.
I have two C+s a c- and a D+ (freshman year don’t ask) but i have a 3.7. I kind of feel like i should just throw the NAF status to the wind and just try to bump up my sat subjects.

Yoskis, I just saw this note. Yes, that is tricky with the low grades. R u the kid looking at the national merit achievement award? If so, maybe there is more flexibility on the SAT scores. I’m assuming the grades will be an issue for finalist status regardless. For now, sit tight and see whether you’re a semi-finalist. if so and good luck with that, get input from your GC and principal about your odds as a finalist. Even if they are not sure, they likely have connections with other principals and GC’s and can ask others for you about the best call for you. if you retake the SAT, I agree with others you should take it before December. that way, if needed, you can take it a third time. And yes, by all means study. Why do you want to bump up your SAT subjects? Are they needed based for the schools you are applying to, including for merit aid? Your ACT score is great and at least in the case of my kid, it does not look like the SAT subject tests are necessary. They may be for you; again, it really depends on the schools you are looking at but in my lay person’s mind, the SAT subject tests may be less of a deal with your ACT. Do you have a good relationship with your GC who can help u explain away your low freshman grades on college apps? if so, I am again wondering how badly you need the SAT subject tests. There are a lot of variables I don’t know about for you so I’m just raising some questions. and actually, given your bio score, if you’re looking at a science/engineering major at a competitive school, yes that makes sense to retake bio. Feel free to pm me if you want to talk more. Again, I am just a parent, no great guru but it can help to bounce ideas off someone else.

Rambling a bit here but my bottom line advice is if you have a good shot a finalist, you learn that you need a higher SAT for that shot, and you want to attend one of the schools with generous merit aid for finalists, focus on pulling the SAT up before the SAT subject tests. When the SAT score is in the needed range, then work on the subject tests.

Yoskis…those grades are likely a killer, sorry to say. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a D pass thru. And, I think 2 semester C’s are the max.

Are those semester grades or quarter grades?

And what is on your transcript? My kids’ HS ONLY reported “year end” grades. So, an errant C on a quarter or semester grade, never would show up if the year end grade was B or higher.

My apologies if this question has already been answered elsewhere, but some of the posts on this thread seem to suggest that a NMSF may take the SAT multiple times if the first SAT score is not high enough to “confirm” the PSAT score. Is this accurate? I have a son who was just informed that he is an NMSF, but he has never taken the SAT (we will in ACT country). If he were to take it in October and score below 1960-2000, could he take it again in November and December with the hopes of earning a higher score? Thanks.

Yes, the test can be taken more than once, which is all the more reason not to leave the SAT until the last minute! A hundred things can go wrong the day of the test. For my daughter, I made sure she took the test early, with enough time to register and take the test again in case something went wrong.

Excellent. Thanks so much, ScienceGirlMom!
