What is the maximum number of times one can take the SAT?

Also another question, do colleges take SAT Scores from only one test, or do they combine scores from the tests that you scored the best in each section?
I have already taken the SAT twice... The first time was in January and I scored an 1820 with a 560 in Reading, 620 in Math, and 640 in Writing. That was my very first SAT experience and then the studying began. I used the Princeton Review's Cracking the SAT book, which I found to be much more helpful than the blue book because unlike the blue book, it provides full length answers to every single correct answer to each question.
My second time was in March. I think I did significantly better, even though I was just a mere 10 points away from breaking 2000 with a 570 in Reading (Yikes!), 750 in Math (So Happy), and 670 in Writing (Meh.)
If I take the SAT one more time and let's say that I score a 680 in Reading, 710 in Writing, and a 610 in Math... Will colleges take the highest separate scores from each of my tests and add them for a higher Composite score, or will they accept only the scores from my 1990 test? I've read in the Princeton Review that 3 times is the limit for SAT attempts, but some of my friends have already taken it 4 times... Does it look bad on your college application if you do take the SAT more than 3 times???

I’m not aware of any maximum, though the practical maximum is three; after three times, your score is very unlikely to increase if you’re not practicing more than you did for the first trio. There exists no rule from the College Board nor any college that I know of that penalizes applicants for taking the SAT a certain number of times. However, if you obsess over standardized testing, other parts of your application (and, more importantly, your life) will begin to suffer.

Whether a college considers your highest scores from each section over all your sittings (this is called superscoring) or from a single sitting depends on the college. Also, you should consider whether that college acknowledges ScoreChoice or not in your application.

simple answer: no maximum.

There is no maximum, but taking the SAT five or six times “looks” bad on college apps (especially if any score drops) since they can see every score. Taking the SAT too many times signals the college that you are overly desperate to get in when you can focus on more important areas (grades, competitions, extracurriculars).

Also, you probably don’t want to pay ~$50 each for six SAT’s.
