What is the national reputation of Case Western?

I know their engineering program is very good but other than that, it's mostly unheard of... right?

They also have a good business school. Employers in the midwest and Graduate schools have definitely heard of the school.

Not unheard of at all. Strong reputation Nationally in Engineering which also brings name recognition to their other degrees.

A place for CMU rejects ?

I think Case Western is underrated.

underrated

really underrated, and it’s biomedical engineering program is outstanding, and is increasing in the rankings rapidly

It has a good reputation among scientists and engineers.

Since it doesn’t have a big-time sports program, most regular Joes haven’t heard much about it.

Popular with pre-med students as well as engineers. Good business school too. It is an overall great school that often gets overlooked. We were really impressed when we checked it out even though it initially wasn’t on our radar (due to its location).

Case Western’s problem is that it is in Cleveland. Great school, not so great location.

Why does people always rag about Case’s location? I have been on a college visit there and University Circle seem pretty nice to me. Any thoughts?

Decent STEM school, OK business school, reputation for good merit aid but doesn’t meet full need, located in a city that is widely seen as undesirable, mostly by people who have never set foot on Case’s campus.

I think it’s had a hard time carving out a clear identity in the market. It’s a good private school but not quite at the elite level that gets all the attention. It’s got a good engineering program that gets overshadowed by all the engineering powerhouses in the region, from Carnegie Mellon (about 2 hours away) to Michigan, Purdue, Illinois, Northwestern, etc. Even Ohio State’s engineering program is more highly ranked at 30, compared to Case Western’s 44. But with merit aid, it can be a good value.

Case’s reputation is growing due to President Snyder’s efforts, but I agree with what most people say, it’s being overlooked by the large number of good midwest schools. As expected, the reputation within the state of Ohio and around the bordering states is really good. A lot people that have been rejected from Ivy Leagues or other prestige colleges come here which might contribute to its overshadowed rep. It also doesn’t help that its social life and female student body reputation is constantly being ripped, which I feel is a bit exaggerated. But as many have said, those who know the school recognize it as a having a strong science/tech, engineering, and business program.

@MrBond, University Circle is like an oasis. It’s away from the shady areas off campus, so by itself, it’s pretty nice. There are some really nice restaurants scattered around. However, since the surrounding area is pretty bad, there really isn’t too much to do in the nearby places.
