What is the University of Maryland, College Park like?

I need to apply to more schools and I happened to stumble upon UMD. I looked at pictures of the campus and it seems nice. Academically, it has just what I need. I just want to know what the student body is like. Is it diverse? What do they typically do for fun? What kind of setting is the campus? Are there cool places to hang out? Are there any stereotypes? Also, I live in Ohio so I would also like to know how it compares to Ohio State and the pros and cons of each. Thank you in advance!

There are specific sections for each college on this site. I’d post this in the University of Maryland College Park subforum.

I’m also applying to UMD - I visited and thought it was great, plus the kind of program they have for my major is top notch.

I heard that only the engineering and computer science majors are decent, the rest of the schools are not good at all, too many students. social life is very difficult, surrounding city is very ghetto and dirty, it’s only nice for greek life and drinking

Mountains7, you heard wrong and you should probably do some research before giving advice. Especially since this happened to be your first post on CC.

The school is completely the opposite from what you described. I graduated there and have been impressed with all of the good changes they’ve continued to make. They have several ranked academic departments and a strong connection with local industry. As for the area, I just visited Yale with my daughter last week and would pick UMD area on any day over New Haven.

I was out of state and tuition wasn’t cheap. But several of my out of state relatives have turned down the SUNY, U Pittsburgh, and Pennsylvania State to attend and graduate UMD. All are glad that they did that.

Prospective101. UMD is underrated and a gem if it is a match for you. Visit the school and do your research on CC and other forums.
