What is the worth of a BS?

A bachelors degree is so common today. I have a feeling that a bachelors degree in just about any major will put me at very low entry level positions in which I will atleast be working for 5 years before I see 50,000$+.

This site really shook my confidence in my entire plan for the future. Not that this is a bad thing. I was planning on majoring in something along biological sciences, getting my BS and getting into my career. I like to think that I will leave the door open for med school when the time comes, but financial restraints will not make that an easy decision, bassically I need to be on my own asap.

At the same time I want to get paid, good, high paying, very respectable work. Is 6+ years of college pretty much a given?

In the pure sciences? Probably. But people don't do science for the money.

If you want to make 50k+ out of college, major in some sort of engineering and get an engineering job. Bioengineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering... something to suit your tastes and prepare you for med school down the road. And engineers are pretty much in it for the money. Which you will get.
