What is the..

worst thing about Tufts?
I'm a junior and have been looking into Tufts. The problem is, the only information I get is positive. To get a realistic view of the school, I need to know the positives and negatives.
Please give me your candid thoughts on Tufts... please?
Thanks in advance!

There is absolutely no school spirit surrounding athletics for non-athletes (the great majority of the Tufts student body). If sports-related activities are important to you, you should consider schools where athletics are important to non-athletes.

Tufts is really about academics and student activities (clubs, publications, etc.).

Some people think the social scene is lacking. It depends on who you are and what you require, though.

There are no paper towels in my bathroom.
(That's pretty much my biggest complaint so far, though I've only been here a few months....my second biggest complaint is that my housing lottery number for sophomore year sucks)

I think that the worst thing on campus is the pseudo-tolerance of other people. A lot of Tufts students (not everyone, I'm not trying to box people in) claim that they are really openminded and welcoming of every opinion. Unless you are a republican, of course. I'm very liberal, but I try to respect everyone's opinions. I might not like what you have to say, but I'll fight for your right to say it.

And before people jump on me about the Primary Source thing...I do think that what they posted was inconsiderate, stupid and juvenile and do not agree with the publication at all. But on the other hand, I think it's preposterous that people are demanding that the funding from Primary Source is cut because then the campus wouldn't have a conservative voice, no matter how badly they represent themselves. It would not be conducive to a openminded, liberal, tolerant university, like Tufts prides itsefl to be.

from someone who has gotten through the first semester in chemical engineering at tufts, here are the worst things i could come up with:

-you will have to walk up and down the hill alot and it gets annoying after a while especially in the winter
-the food is initially good until it starts to upset your stomach
-some older dorms smell like mold and alcohol
-if you are a party-er, you will complain about no social life
-if you dont party, you will complain about how everyone gets drunk
-the gym is a far walk and you will end up not going as much if u work out
-everyone complains about the tufts police being strict but they are awsome (i work for them)

here are the reasons why the bad stuff doesnt matter:

-you enjoy the courses enough not to care about shlepping up the hills
-if you have food problems the dietician will do anything for you (she is awsome) and will customize a special plan
-the ppl in the dorms are awsome so the smell doesnt really matter, and if u get south hall its new and u get a private, lockable bathroom
-whether you party or not, there is always stuff to do and it is very easy to find a group of ppl to relate to
-if you get sick, the professors will do anything to help you, as well as health services and housing. i know that from experience. i have a long term stomach problem and housing gave me my own room, the health services calls/emails every week to see how i feel, and the professors gave me extensions on everything, make-up chemistry labs, and private help after office hours
-the partying situation is probably the biggest issue on campus. however i do not know of any other school where students can complain about the social life and the administration holds a meeting along with the police dept to discuss improving it

There are crap toilet paper in my bathroom. My ass hurts :(

Ah yes, the infamous sandpaper TP.... Unfortunately, I think every university in the nation is cheap when it comes to bathroom amenities.

It's funny you mention the bathrooms, because that is my latest pet peeve.
There is a certain bathroom where the toilet paper dispenser has been ripped off the wall for weeks, and no one has put up a new one. Also, most of the bathrooms by the end of the weekend are pretty disgusting.

Walking up and down the hill to classes is annoying. I remember when I was a freshman I used to wake up in the middle of the night with leg cramps.
Try to get into a dorm at the top of the hill, less walking to classes I think.

I don't think there has ever been much school spirit in regards to athletics.
Doesn't bother me any though.

Camerakid is the perfect example of the good things about Tufts. Tufts isn't so large that you get overlooked. The administration and teachers really care about the students. My dad died three weeks into my freshman year at Tufts.
Someone went around and told all my teachers and they were very nice to me. I used to invite my English teacher and advisor over to my apartment for dinner. Another English teacher used to have classes in her house. She was an extremely famous poet and would invite us to meet other famous writers.
It was an amazing experience.

"the gym is a far walk"
I always find that a funny reason not to work out. Granted, it's very true (I'd probably go if it was closer, and so would my roommate), but how ironic! "I want to work out and get some exercise, but the gym is just such a far walk..."

And uphill dorm doesn't mean less hill if you go to South/Pearson/Aidekman a lot. Oh, or if you live in Hill Hall (uphill both ways!).
But I kinda like that I'm forced to walk up hills. I don't make the effort to exercise, so I feel like this is how I'm burning calories.

I agree with you sam927. It is funny that the gym's location would provide a reason to not work out. It is good exercise to walk to the gym. I must admit though, it is somewhat annoying. My daughter never takes the shuttle bus to Davis Square because she says it only takes ten minutes to walk there and it's good exercise.

Does everyone like the food? My daughter is a vegetarian and she says they serve the same thing for the vegetarians all the time: pasta.

See:

http://www.studentsreview.com/viewprofile.php3?k=1162683577&u=603

As for the distance to the gym, the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science building is at the the same location, "across the tracks".

it's strongly advisable to bring your own toilet paper to school.

Aside from that I have a few other complaints: the weather (though a lot less this year lol), the hill, the math department, and the fact that some students are very cliquey (though definately not everybody)

Alright, I have a beef about people who think I'm lazy for taking the Joey (Tufts' free shuttle service) to Davis Square. If you live in a place like South, then yes, it's only about a ten minute walk, no big deal. If you live somewhere like Hill then it's more like a twenty minute walk (and even longer when you have luggage....just saying).
It's just a lot easier to take the wonderful Joey (who is not one of the worst things about Tufts - that bus is among the best parts!)

Whats so bad about the math department?

Yeah, what's so bad? I have had great professors and classes in the math dept! And I have two math major friend who've had no qualms, either.

Their grading policy sucks. To bring down the scale, the math department takes off huge amount of points for very stupid reasons instead of just making the tests harder. This discourages students to actually learn the subject better and forces them to focus on learning how to take Tufts math tests.

Although I'd assume that this problem goes away for higher level courses.
