Colleges are required to report campus crime incidents under the Clery Act. Just google “Clery crime statistics report,” along with the name of the college.

Here is Amherst’s:

https://www.amherst.edu/media/view/122491/original/Clery%20Report%202008.pdf

Reported forcible sex offenses, for the years 2009-2011: 7, 13, 15

For other comparable schools in the same period:

Williams: 2, 5, 7
Swarthmore: 1, 2, 3
Bowdoin: 5, 7, 7
Haverford: 7, 8, 3

I didn’t have time to look up/adjust for the number of students at each but I believe they are comparable.

Obviously the internet is full of anecdotal information as well. Unfortunately, some of that, if true, does not cast Amherst in a positive light. I have not heard of other “elite” colleges in which male fraternity members wore t-shirts for a party printed with a drawing of an underwear-clad woman roasting on a spit while a pig stands by smoking a cigar. The headline reads “Roasting fat ones since 1847.”

[Amherst College: ?Roasting Fat Ones Since 1847? AC VOICE](http://acvoice.com/2012/10/08/amherst-college-roasting-fat-ones-since-1847/)

Many, many people have suggested that this t-shirt is a manifestation of the misogynistic culture that, for some reason, prevails at Amherst. Does this mean every young man who attends the college has these attitudes? No. Does it mean that every female student is a potential victim? No. But the fact that seemingly smart (“cream of the crop”) students thought this was funny is concerning.

Having said all that, Amherst is a respected college with outstanding academics. And it has a great new president who, I believe, will do everything she can to bring about positive change in the area of campus safety and culture. But to turn a blind eye to documented problems, or say “this happens everywhere” doesn’t make anything better for either potential victims or innocent male students who are unfairly lumped into the same category of those who are committing these atrocious acts.
