I already filled the 2017-18 fafsa. What do you mean by assuming the grant money will double? Why would i be assuming that… Uconn sent me an award that lists a specific amount each semester,
What you don’t know is what your grant amount would be for each semester if you attend the FULL YEAR!
You need to find that out. Your current grant amount will NOT pay a full year of tuition for OOS UConn. Younare assuming your per semester award will be the same for next year…and that simply might not be the case.
Yes but Im not getting anything solved by sitting here, and arguing over the weekend. Uconn is closed. Do you not realize theres literally nothing I can do about it right now. The best I can do is email them and wait for their response.
@AvPsychologyGirl I still think it would be a good idea to look at Westfield State U. They have agreements with other MA publics. IS tuition and fees is approx. 15k this year. Info for transfer students: http://www.westfield.ma.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/transfer-applicants.
It looks as though they give generous credit for MA community college courses, and have transfer agreements for a variety of MA CC programs. You would more likely maximize your transfer credits and better optimize your financial aid if you transfer to a MA public after completing your Associates degree. If you continue to do well at your CC and can keep your GPA trending upward, they will be more likely to meet your need, too.
One of my nieces attended WSU, did well, and really loved her time there. She is currently back there working on a masters degree.
I think it would definitely be worth a visit, and may work financially for you, so you can position yourself successfully for graduate school. By all means, try applying to some reach 100% meets need schools, too, and see what happens. It is also not absolutely necessary to go directly into graduate school right after completing your Bachelors. My oldest D wanted to take a gap year after graduating this past spring, rather than spending lots of time on grad school applications, visits, interviews, etc. while keeping grades up in tough classes during her senior year. She is submitting applications now, while working and saving up some $$.
Why is UMASS Amherst not on the table? If you live near Smith, then you live near UMASS.
UMass is not on the table because I toured the school and don’t like it. I’m not attending a school if I don’t like it
Sometimes you have to go to the school you can afford, and that may be UMass.
People who can’t afford a Mercedes may need to settle for a Toyota.
You clearly don’t know me as a person.
What you want to hear is that your offer from UConn is fantastic, that your plan to commute for over two hours a day in the winter will be no problem, that you’ll attend UConn for the spring and summer for free and be accepted into your dream school of Tufts to start in the fall and that will be free too.
Okay. What does it matter what packages other students received from UConn? Your offer is your offer. Opinions here are that it isn’t enough, but we clearly don’t know you as a person. Go for it.
No what I meant is, I’m stubborn and I typically do the opposite of what is recommended no matter what the cons are. I actually received an email from UConn this morning and they said I will be receiving the same amount of grant money every year.
Also, grad schools will not differentiate between UCONN and UMASS - they are equivalent schools. Have you gotten your basic psych prerequisites out of the way? Bio, Stats, etc. If you think you are going to transfer into UCONN and begin doing research right away, you are mistaken. It doesn’t work that way. Good luck to you.
I know they will not differentiate between the two schools but there are no opportunities for me to do research and the other things I am interested in at UMass. I know how research, prerequisites and all that works. I’ve actually talked to people who’ve done real studies and gotten published along with their Phd from top notch schools. There’s also other things I’m interested in, like double majoring in neurobiology. Psychology isn’t my only interest!
Have you done Bio 101 and Stats 101? You can’t do any of those majors/minors/ etc. without those courses. You need to get realistic with your goals for the next 2 years- multiple majors, transferring schools twice, meaningful research etc… are unrealistic if you don’t get through your basic courses with great grades.
You can go to a great grad school if you get through a 4 year university with fantastic grades in one major. Other majors, crazy research etc… are in second place in the order of importance.
Hello AvPsy.
It is good that UCONN was able to get to you so quickly.
I wanted to point out something so that you would have a chance to check on it before you pull the trigger.
The wording that colleges use and what people hear or want to hear can cause confusion at times.
You said UCONN replied that you that you will receive the “same amount of grant money every year”.
You should confirm with them that they will not split the money in half for each semester. Colleges will sometimes do this. They will give you half for the fall and then the other half in the spring. Are you banking on taking all the grant money in the fall? They might see it differently. I would hate for you to come up short because of a misunderstanding.
Just a thought for you to consider.
You stated in your first post that icon gave you approx 18k this year ( for the spring semester)
If UConn gives you 18k next year (2) semesters it will be financially impossible for you to attend.
The challenge is they gave you the annual amount of your loan-$6500 in the spring semester. Next year you will receive a $7500 loan for the ** entire school year** (less if you attend summer school.
What does your package break out to:
Loans
Pell grant
UConn scholarship
UConn grant
Are your scholarships automatically renewable. Is there a gpa requirement to keep the scholarship.
This is what you are guaranteed next year
$5815 in spell
$7500 loan
Even if they give you the $11k scholarship, it will not be enough to cover your costs.
Yes, they gave me a 6500 loan… so what exactly is your point? Overall, uconn has already already confirmed that they will give me 19,007 per semester in loans + grants. What is the problem here? That is enough to cover tuition, books, and I already have transportation covered.
@sybbie719 it’s not per year! It’s per semester
@AvPsychologyGirl Your temperament needs work, especially for someone interested in psychology. People are only trying to help you. Stubbornness, which you proudly claim, is not an admirable trait and will continue to impede your success in life. Please listen to those offering you advice.
Hello AvPsy.
Sorry about that. I got confused.
I understand now (lol. maybe I am just slow on the uptake today).
So UCONN confirmed they are giving you $19K per semester in Grants and loans. I was thinking they said this was yearly. Me bad.
AvPsy. You have a great deal from UCONN! I am so happy for you. That is absolutely fantastic! I am going to mention this to my son and see if he cannot apply to UCONN and receive something similar. We too are out of state and in MA. I just never knew UCONN gave that type of aid to out of state people.
Thank you for sharing this btw. I am sure others will appreciate the information as well.
